Potential Distribution of Colonizing Nine-Banded Armadillos at Their Northern Range Edge

چکیده
The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) has become a recent addition to the local fauna of Illinois as response habitat alteration and climate change. This range expansion resulted in presence armadillos areas not predicted by earlier models. Although these models have been revised, continue move north reached heavy agricultural use. We identified conditions that favor potential corridors for dispersal. Identifying distribution is vital step anticipating their arrival containing potentially sensitive wildlife populations habitats. Armadillo locations (n = 37) collected during 2016–2020 were used develop map southern Illinois. Environmental data layers included model land cover type, distance water, forest edge, human modification, climactic variables. Land type was most important contributing variable model. Our results are consistent with tenet activity dispersal centered around riparian areas, forested may provide an mosaic.

Population Dynamics and Range Expansion in Nine-Banded Armadillos
Understanding why certain species can successfully colonize new areas while others do not is a central question in ecology. The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is a conspicuous example of a successful invader, having colonized much of the southern United States in the last 200 years. We used 15 years (1992-2006) of capture-mark-recapture data from a population of armadillos in nort...
متن کاملGrowth Rates of Juvenile Nine-banded Armadillos
Growth rates were determined for two captive litters (one male and one female) of nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) born to the same parents in two successive years. For females, gain in mass from birth to about 2 years old was best described by a fourth order polynomial function. However, increase in mass was linear from birth up to at least 400 days of age. The male litter was bor...
متن کاملMetal accumulation in wild nine-banded armadillos.
Nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) are widespread and abundant New World mammals with a lifestyle that entails prolonged, intimate contact with soils. Thus, armadillos would seem a promising candidate as a sentinel species to monitor chemical contamination in terrestrial ecosystems. Surprisingly, there have been virtually no toxicology studies on armadillos. Here, we provide the firs...
متن کاملRecords of Nine-Banded Armadillos, Dasypus novemcinctus, in Illinois
The nine-banded armadillo, Dasypus novemcinctus, has been expanding its range in the United State since the mid-1800s. There had been sporadic reports of this species in Illinois prior to 1990. I conducted a mail survey in 2003 of individuals knowledgeable about the fauna of southern Illinois to investigate the possible expansion of the armadillo into the state. I also sent questionnaires to an...
متن کاملMycobacterium leprae in six-banded (Euphractus sexcinctus) and nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) in Northeast Brazil.
Human beings are the main reservoir of the causative agent of leprosy, Mycobacterium leprae. In the Americas, nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) also act as a reservoir for the bacillus. In the state of Ceará (CE), which is located in Northeast Brazil and is an endemic area of leprosy, there are several species of armadillos, including D. novemcinctus and Euphractus sexcinctus (six-b...
