Potential benefits of climate change for potatoes in the United States

چکیده

Abstract Potatoes are a mainstay of human diets and 4 million metric tons produced annually in the United States. Simulations future crop production show that climate change is likely to reduce yields major grain crops around world, but impacts on potato have yet be determined. A model ensemble consisting five process-based one statistical was used estimate impact fully irrigated, well-fertilized across USA under RCP 8.5 scenario high emissions. Results indicate increasing temperature will yields, this mostly compensated by elevated atmospheric CO 2 . Yields predicted decline with current highest-yielding areas, which might experience highest rises growing season during short hot summers. Simulated increase slightly elsewhere southern regions USA. Planting potatoes earlier as adaptation avoid summers improve most regions. Water use despite higher temperatures, due shorter increased water efficiency With many regions, uptake for (nitrogen + phosphorus potassium) NPK fertilizer increase, reduced concentration nutrients growth stimulus from planting, 2050 11.7%, 10.4%, less nutritious 14.9% nationally.

The papers in this Special Issue are the primary technical underpinnings for the Northeast Climate Impacts Assessment (NECIA), an integrated regional-scale assessment of projected climate change, impacts and options for mitigation and adaptation across the US Northeast. The consequences of future pathways of greenhouse gas emissions on projected climate and impacts across climate-sensitive sect...

Improving predictions of summer climate change in the United States

[1] Across vast, agriculturally intensive regions of the United States, the spread in predictions of summer temperature and soil moisture under global warming is curiously elevated in current climate models. Some models show modest warming of 2–3C and little drying or slight moistening by the 22nd century, while at the other extreme are simulations with warming as large as 7–8C and 20– 40% redu...

Public understanding of climate change in the United States.

This article considers scientific and public understandings of climate change and addresses the following question: Why is it that while scientific evidence has accumulated to document global climate change and scientific opinion has solidified about its existence and causes, U.S. public opinion has not and has instead become more polarized? Our review supports a constructivist account of human...

Climate change, humidity, and mortality in the United States.

This paper estimates the effects of humidity and temperature on mortality rates in the United States (c. 1973-2002) in order to provide an insight into the potential health impacts of climate change. I find that humidity, like temperature, is an important determinant of mortality. Coupled with Hadley CM3 climate-change predictions, I project that mortality rates are likely to change little on t...
