Postnatal SARSCOV2 Infection in Neonates, Characteristics and Outcomes: An Observational Study

Background: Many aspects of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV2) pandemic in 2019 have been unclear, especially newborns, and reports neonatal diseases are usually associated with perinatal infection. Objectives: The purpose this study was to evaluate clinical para-clinical manifestations newborns that contracted infection after birth. Methods: This observational research conducted from October 2020 March 2022 examine postnatal SARSCoV2 infants admitted NICU or ward at Children’s Medical Center Tehran, Iran. Inclusion open neonates who had positive RT-PCR results postnatally. Results: In total, 55 were confirmed SARSCOV2. Fever most frequently observed symptom, 35 (61%). Necrotizing enterocolitis seen 18% neonates, 30% them preterm. Neutropenia 34% cases, five cases having neutropenia. All a normal platelet count. Twenty percent patients showed C - reactive protein higher than 6 mg/L. Two co-existing bacterial urinary tract infections. Our didn't require antiviral, anticoagulant, corticosteroid medications, they recovered while receiving only supportive care. Everyone group discharged without complications, there no deaths. Conclusions: high rate fever, C- protein, neutropenia suggests more is needed compare these symptoms sepsis avoid overuse antibiotics patients.
