Positive early?late life?history trait correlations in elephant seals

چکیده
Correlations between early- and late-life performance are a major prediction of life-history theory. Negative early–late correlations can emerge because biological processes optimized for early but not late life (e.g., rapid development may accelerate the onset senescence; “developmental theory aging”) or allocation to early-life comes at cost in terms (as disposable soma theory). But variation genetic environmental challenges that each individual has cope with during also lead positive trait (the “fixed heterogeneity” “individual quality” hypothesis). We analyzed trajectories 7,420 known-age female southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) monitored over 36 yr determine how actuarial senescence (a proxy performance) correlate age first reproduction performance). As some breeding events be detected this field study, we used custom “multievent” hierarchical model estimate it other traits. The probability was 0.34 3, most females time 4, comparatively few older ages. Females an outperformed delayed breeders all aspects considered (survival, rate senescence, net reproductive output) one: appeared have 1 earlier compared breeders. Genetics conditions likely explain correlation performance. Our results provide evidence seals.

متن کاملForaging Ecology of Northern Elephant Seals
Sexual segregation in foraging is predicted from the great size disparity of male and female northern elephant seals, Mirounga angustirostris. Our aim was to test this prediction by measuring diving and foraging behavior, foraging locations, and distribution of the sexes during biannual migrations in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. Daily movements of 27 adult males and 20 adult females, during ...

Northern Elephant Seal Skin Disease (NESSD) is a severe, ulcerative, skin condition of unknown cause affecting primarily yearling northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris); it has been associated with decreased levels of circulating thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Abnormalities of the thyroid gland that result in decreased hormone levels (hypothyroidism) can result in hair los...
متن کاملMaternal Traits and Reproductive Effort in Northern Elephant Seals
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of maternal traits on reproductive expenditure and energy delivery to the offspring in a capital breeder, the northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris). Changes in maternal and offspring energy reserves and milk-energy delivery were examined in relation to maternal parturition mass, body composition, and age in females and pups breeding ...
متن کاملWater conservation in fasting northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris).
Prolonged terrestrial fasting is a key element in the life history of elephant seals. While on land seals typically fast without access to fresh water, and thus must maintain positive water balance by reductions in water loss such that they can subsist primarily on metabolic water production (MWP). The terrestrial apnea demonstrated by seals may reduce respiratory evaporative water loss (REWL) ...
