Pore pressure coefficient in frozen soils

چکیده

The Skempton pore pressure coefficient, B, is defined as the variation in with unit change confining under undrained conditions. B parameter an essential to consider coupled effects of solid–fluid compressibility and skeleton a porous system. It key factor exploring possible definition effective stress frozen soil. However, limited experimental theoretical research available literature give insight problem. Therefore, series tests on clay was conducted this study. Results from these tests, along Ottawa sand, literature, are analysed considering effect ice crystallisation mode stiffness. measured values were lower than expected compared using models that single grain bulk when difference stiffness soil grains considered, even increase volume, for fluid pressure, at constant Terzaghi possible. ‘pore stiffness’, which different solid phase stiffness, can take negative value be used explain low values.

Prediction of excess pore pressure due to dissociation of gas hydrate within sandy soils

The small hydrate concept (SHC) was proposed to predict the generated excess pore water pressure due to dissociation of gas hydrate within sandy soils. This concept was then used to calculate excess pore water pressure in the Storegga slide of which gas hydrate dissociation may have contributed. Since the excess pore water pressure calculated by the SHC resulted in the considerable loss of stif...

Cryogenic Displacement and Accumulation of Biogenic Methane in Frozen Soils

Evidences of highly localized methane fluxes are reported from the Arctic shelf, hot spots of methane emissions in thermokarst lakes, and are believed to evolve to features like Yamal crater on land. The origin of large methane outbursts is problematic. Here we show, that the biogenic methane (δ13C ≤ −71h) which formed before and during soil freezing is presently held in the permafrost. Field a...

Modelling of cryogenic processes in permafrost and seasonally frozen soils

This paper investigates the thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behaviour of soils subjected to seasonal temperature variations in both permafrost and seasonally frozen conditions. Numerical modelling of soil freezing and ice segregation processes is presented, and compared against small-scale physical modelling experiments. The coupled THM model presented, which is solved by way of a transient finit...

The subzero microbiome: microbial activity in frozen and thawing soils.

Most of the Earth's biosphere is characterized by low temperatures (<5°C) and cold-adapted microorganisms are widespread. These psychrophiles have evolved a complex range of adaptations of all cellular constituents to counteract the potentially deleterious effects of low kinetic energy environments and the freezing of water. Microbial life continues into the subzero temperature range, and this ...
