Pore changes in an illitic clay during one-dimensional compression

چکیده
The pore size, shape and orientation of an illite-dominant clay were mapped during one-dimensional compression, using mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), scanning electron microscopy gas adsorption. total porosity was found to spread over the three International Union Pure Applied Chemistry classes pores sizes: micropores (below 2 nm), mesopores (2–50 nm) macropores (above 50 all observed compression. structure is aggregated, with visible inter-aggregate (about 80% porosity), remaining intra-aggregate size approximately equal thickness illite platelets (50–100 layers). During compression largest first collapsed, followed by a progressive collapse, in orderly manner, smaller pores. MIP data suggest that macroscopic deformation mainly translates at scale into changes porosity, while micro- mesopore range. Gas adsorption tests show volume decreases loading, probably due rearrangement particles composing aggregates, specific surface area reduces. Examination pores’ on both vertical horizontal planes confirms preferential normal loading direction, gradual flattening

Seasonal changes in pore water pressure in a grass-covered cut slope in London Clay
In temperate European climates, the season of peak water demand by vegetation (summer) is out of phase with the season of greatest rainfall (winter). This results in seasonal fluctuations in soil water content and, in clay soils, associated problems of shrinking and swelling that can in turn contribute to strain-softening and progressive slope failure. This paper presents field measurements of ...
متن کاملQuasi-One-Dimensional Phase Transitions in Nanopores: Pore-Pore Correlation Effects
For adsorbates confined within a single, sufficiently narrow cylindrical pore, no phase transitions occur because the system is too close to the one-dimensional limit. We study the influence of intermolecular correlations between adsorbed molecules in neighboring cylindrical pores, using molecular simulation. For a simple model of methane in the molecular sieve ALPO4-5, we find that a phase tra...
متن کاملAn ACO algorithm for one-dimensional cutting stock problem
The one-dimensional cutting stock problem, has so many applications in lots of industrial processes and during the past few years has attracted so many researchers’ attention all over the world. In this paper a meta-heuristic method based on ACO is presented to solve this problem. In this algorithm, based on designed probabilistic laws, artificial ants do select various cuts and then select the...
متن کاملExperiments in Simple One-Dimensional Lossy Image Compression Schemes
This paper examines some one-dimensional lossy image compression schemes. To perform one-dimensional compression, an image is scanned into a one-dimensional array which is then compressed. Three types of scanning are considered: raster scan, Hilbert scan, and binary scan. Hilbert and binary scan are found to outperform raster scan. The methods considered for compression are integer wavelet tran...
متن کاملAn Analytical Solution for One-dimensional Horizontal Imbibition in a Cocurrent Flow
Cocurrent spontaneous imbibition (COCSI) of an aqueous phase into matrix blocks arising from capillary forces is an important mechanism for petroleum recovery from fractured petroleum reservoirs. In this work, the modeling of countercurrent imbibition is used to develop the appropriate scaling equations. Considering the imbibition process and the water and oil movement respectively as the wet p...
