Population niche breadth and individual trophic specialisation of fish along a climate-productivity gradient

چکیده

Abstract A mechanistic understanding of how environmental change affects trophic ecology fish at the individual and population level remains elusive. To address this, we conducted a space-for-time approach incorporating gradients (temperature, precipitation nutrients), lake morphometry (visibility, depth area), communities (richness, competition predation), prey availability (richness density) feeding (population niche breadth specialisation) for 15 native taxa belonging to different thermal guilds from 35 subarctic lakes along marked climate-productivity gradient corresponding future climate predictions. We revealed significant contrasting responses two generalist species that are abundant widely distributed in region. The cold-water adapted European whitefish ( Coregonus lavaretus ) reduced specialisation warmer more productive lakes. Conversely, cool-water Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis showed increased levels specialism gradient. Although differed way they consumed gradient, both switched consumption zooplankton cooler, less lakes, macrozoobenthos warmer, Species with specialist benthic or pelagic did not show changes conclude consumers, such as perch, have clear advantages over colder clear-water specialised morphs through their capacity undergo reciprocal benthic–pelagic switches associated change. flexibility is likely key trait dominance high latitudes under

The latitudinal gradient in niche breadth: concepts and evidence.

We examine Robert MacArthur's hypothesis that niche breadth is positively associated with latitude (the latitude-niche breadth hypothesis). This idea has been influential and long standing, yet no studies have evaluated its generality or the validity of its assumptions. We review the theoretical arguments suggesting a positive relationship between niche breadth and latitude. We also use availab...

Niche Partitioning Along an Environmental Gradient

Biological systematics studies suggest that species are discretized in niche space. That is, rather than seeing a continuum of organism types with respect to continuous environmental variations, observers instead find discrete species or clumps of species, with one clump separated from another in niche space by a gap. Here, using a simple one dimensional model with a smoothly varying environmen...

Invasibility of plankton food webs along a trophic state gradient

Biological invasions are becoming more common, yet the majority of introduced exotic species fail to establish viable populations in new environments. Current ecological research suggests that invasion success may be determined by properties of the native ecosystem, such as the supply rate of limiting nutrients (i.e. trophic state). We examined how trophic state influences invasion success by i...
