Finite element approximation of the Sobolev constant

Denoting by S the sharp constant in the Sobolev inequality in W 0 (B), being B the unit ball in R, and denoting by Sh its approximation in a suitable finite element space, we show that Sh converges to S as h ↘ 0 with a polynomial rate of convergence. We provide both an upper and a lower bound on the rate of convergence, and present some numerical results.

Lecture 20 : Low - rank Approximation with Element - wise Sampling

So far, we have been talking about sampling/projection of rows/columns—i.e., we have been working with the actual columns/rows or linear combinations of the columns/rows of an input matrix A. Formally, this means that we are preor post-multiplying the input matrix A with a sampling/projection/sketching operator (that itself can be represented as a matrix) to construct another matrix A′ (with di...

In particular, this means that smaller entries of A lead to random variables with smaller variance. On the other hand, the bound on ∥∥∥A− Â∥∥∥ 2 depends on the maximum variance. Thus, to improve the results, one idea is to keep entries of Aij with probability pij ≤ p, so that all entries in  have roughly the same variance. This will help us to get sparser matrices, while keeping similar qualit...

Locking Effects in the Finite Element Approximation of Plate Models

We analyze the robustness of various standard finite element schemes for a hierarchy of plate models and obtain asymptotic convergence estimates that are uniform in terms of the thickness d . We identify h version schemes that show locking, i.e., for which the asymptotic convergence rate deteriorates as ¿->0, and also show that the p version is free of locking. In order to isolate locking effec...

Continuous/discontinuous finite element modelling of Kirchhoff plate structures in R3 using tangential differential calculus

We employ surface differential calculus to derive models for Kirchhoff plates including in-plane membrane deformations. We also extend our formulation to structures of plates. For solving the resulting set of partial differential equations, we employ a finite element method based on elements that are continuous for the displacements and discontinuous for the rotations, using C0-elements for the...
