Politicizing Muslim Mental Health Toward a Decolonial Framework

There is a growing recognition that mental illness should be taken more seriously within Muslim communities. In this are emerging trends to Islamicise psychology or psychologise Islam, whereby the former attempts adapt contemporary psychological practices for Muslims, while latter endeavours indigenise and establish rooted firmly in Islamic traditions. Yet large body of interdisciplinary works has argued Muslims uniquely positioned vis-à-vis Nation-States across Global North. thus need underscore significance political which underpins relationship between ‘Muslim’ ‘mental health’. The will explored by addressing three paradigms their particular health: neoliberalism, nationalism securitisation. I argue health, irrespective approach discipline, unique its ability serve power ensure remain productive, loyal low-risk citizens Nation-State. Emerging health models may succeed stated objective—alleviate suffering raise God consciousness—but they do not address dimension underlying practice itself. movement towards decolonising must constant dialectical resistance with dominant ideological an praxis established upon paradigm trusteeship (waqf). This ensures neither commodified nor compartmentalised outside wider Western experience.
