Polar inelastic profiles in fast-atom diffraction at surfaces

چکیده
Elastic diffraction of fast atoms at crystal surfaces under grazing incidence $\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\approx}1$\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} has strong similarities with atomic thermal energies discovered almost hundred years ago. Here, we focus on the polar scattering profile, which does not exhibit features but shows well-defined elastic and inelastic components that are found to be essentially independent crystallographic axis. The width ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\ensuremath{\theta}}$ component is very sensitive weak attractive forces responsible for physisorption. This effect visible an energy range ten times larger than depth $D$ physisorption well. Experimental data analyzed using a binary collision model Morse potential where profile connected classical loss governed by surface stiffness, defined as logarithmic derivative interaction along normal. main outcome make mean twice harder low energy.

Suppression of decoherence in fast-atom diffraction at surfaces.
Scattering of fast neutral atoms with keV kinetic energies at alkali-halide surfaces under grazing angles displays intriguing diffraction patterns. The surprisingly strong persistence of quantum coherence despite the impulsive interaction with an environment at solid state density and elevated temperatures raises fundamental questions such as to the suppression of decoherence and of the quantum...
متن کاملInelastic Diffraction at Heavy Ion Colliders
The heavy ion physics approach to global event characterization has led us to instrument the forward region in the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. In heavy ion collisions this coverage yields a measurement of the “spectator” energy and its distribution about the beam direction. This energy flow is the basis of event-by-event determination of the centrality and reaction plane which are key to analyzi...
متن کاملCausal trajectories description of atom diffraction by surfaces
The method of quantum trajectories proposed by de Broglie and Bohm is applied to the study of atom diffraction by surfaces. As an example, a realistic model for the scattering of He off corrugated Cu is considered. In this way, the final angular distribution of trajectories is obtained by box counting, which is in excellent agreement with the results calculated by standard S matrix methods of s...
متن کاملRumpling of LiF(001) surface from fast atom diffraction
Quantum diffraction of fast atoms scattered from the topmost layer of surfaces under grazing angles of incidence can be employed for the analysis of detailed structural properties of insulator surfaces. From comparison of measured and calculated diffraction patterns we deduce the rumpling of the topmost surface layer of LiF(001) (i.e., an inward shift of Li+ ions with respect to F− ions). The e...
