چکیده

In direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs), the oxidation of alcohols happens at expenses oxygen reduction reaction cathode. DAFCs' cathodes use a significant amount platinum that is an expensive critical raw material. Moreover, oxidizes alcohols, fact combined with crossover, decreases significantly performance cells. The Fe-based (FeNC) group metal–free (PGM-free) convenient strategy to overcome these limitations. This review analyzes application PGM-free DAFCs. discussion focuses on acidic systems and covers following subjects: (i) breakdown DAFC potential in its components, (ii) analysis advantages from cathode, (iii) durability closes view authors future perspective for research.

Metal-Free Carbon-Based Materials: Promising Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Microbial Fuel Cells

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a promising green approach for wastewater treatment with the simultaneous advantage of energy production. Among the various limiting factors, the cathodic limitation, with respect to performance and cost, is one of the main obstacles to the practical applications of MFCs. Despite the high performance of platinum and other metal-based cathodes, their practical use...

Mechanistic Insights into the Oxygen Reduction Reaction on Metal–N–C Electrocatalysts under Fuel Cell Conditions

Fuel cells can play a crucial role in a future sustainable world; however, these devices are currently based on platinum group metals (PGMs), which is a catalyst group of materials considered as critical raw materials. Furthermore, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is more than six orders of magnitude slower than the hydrogen oxidation reaction, requires the cathode of polymer electrol...

Fe/N/C hollow nanospheres by Fe(iii)-dopamine complexation-assisted one-pot doping as nonprecious-metal electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction.

In this work, a series of hollow carbon nanospheres simultaneously doped with N and Fe-containing species are prepared by Fe(3+)-mediated polymerization of dopamine on SiO2 nanospheres, carbonization and subsequent KOH etching of the SiO2 template. The electrochemical properties of the hollow nanospheres as nonprecious-metal electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are characterized...

Fe@N‐Graphene Nanoplatelet‐Embedded Carbon Nanofibers as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

An activated carbon nanofiber (CNF) is prepared with incorporated Fe-N-doped graphene nanoplatelets (Fe@NGnPs), via a novel and simple synthesis approach. The activated CNF-Fe@NGnP catalysts exhibit substantially improved activity for the oxygen reduction reaction compared to those of commercial carbon blacks and Pt/carbon catalysts.
