Platelet Storage: Time to Rethink the Cold

Platelet concentrates (PCs) are widely used in transfusion medicine for therapeutic purposes and their demand is constantly on the rise. Current storage regulations make this product highly susceptible to bacterial contaminations platelet lesions (PSL) causing need alternative methods be considered. The implementation of cold not only reduces unnecessary wastage valuable donations overall costs but also decreases both risk contamination occurrence PSL. current study aimed at determining how a prolonged may affect PCs. This was accomplished by investigating two different PC cohorts 10 units each. One cohorts, labelled as ‘Room Temperature’, stored 22℃±2℃ 5 days then transferred temperature 4℃±2℃. other cohort, ‘Cold’, directly Both were total 21 indices, counts, pH, factor IV (PF4) measured time intervals. Sterility performed Day 21. key findings showed no significant difference mean count, distribution width (PDW), volume (MPV), platelet-large cell ratio (P-LCR), plateletcrit (PCT) between cohorts. On hand, pH PF4 resulted Moreover, PCT found Days 1, 5, or 10, However, an PDW, MPV, P-LCR discovered 1 21, Regards PF4, detected 21; however, Corynebacterium freneyi Microbacterium liquefaciens, cultured from unit room cohort after it flagged positive during sterility testing. In conclusion, through delayed system, PCs can safely administered patient.
