Plaque Elasticity and Intraplaque Neovascularisation on Carotid Artery Ultrasound: A Comparative Histological Study

چکیده
ObjectivePlaque elasticity and intraplaque neovascularisation are strongly suggestive of vulnerable plaque. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between plaque elasticity, compare ultrasound findings with histopathological changes.MethodsPatients enrolled in this presented symptomatic carotid stenosis (> 70%) later underwent both pre-operative ultrasonography endarterectomy. Contrast enhanced (CEUS) shear wave elastography (SWE) were used measure plaque, respectively. After removal, plaques histologically assessed determine microvessel density (MVD), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 expression, type I/type III collagen ratio using immunohistochemistry staining morphometry. A correlation analysis was establish among aforementioned quantitative parameters. Inter- intra-observer consistency evaluations performed intraclass coefficient Bland–Altman plots.ResultsNinety-four patients 98 included. The area under curve (AUC) detected CEUS correlated its velocity (SWV) (r = –.714; p < .001), MVD .842; I/III –.833; MMP-9 .738; .001). SWE positively .805; overall interexaminer acceptable .638; interobserver AUC, time peak (TP), mean transit (MTT), SWV .719, .756, .733, .686, variability values TP, MTT, .826, .845, .633, .748, respectively.ConclusionSWE can comprehensively evaluate vulnerability by assessing within it. negative further validated histological findings, suggests that more abundant neovascularisation, less elasticity. Data on consistency among different methods to assess atherosclerotic plaque echogenicity on standard ultrasound and intraplaque neovascularization on contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging in human carotid artery
Here we provide the correlation among different carotid ultrasound (US) variables to assess echogenicity n standard carotid US and to assess intraplaque neovascularization on contrast enhanced US. We recruited 45 consecutive subjects with an asymptomatic≥50% carotid artery stenosis. Carotid plaque echogenicity at standard US was visually graded according to Gray-Weale classification (GW) and me...
متن کاملCarotid artery intraplaque hemorrhage and stenotic velocity.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE One of the proposed mechanisms for sudden expansion of a carotid bifurcation plaque is hemorrhage within the lesion. It has been postulated that the sudden increase in plaque size will acutely reduce blood flow to the ipsilateral hemisphere and induce either a transient ischemic attack or a stroke. In this study, the relation between peak systolic velocity at the site of ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE An important characteristic of vulnerable plaque, intraplaque hemorrhage, may predict plaque rupture. Plaque rupture can be visible on noninvasive imaging as a disruption of the plaque surface. We investigated the association between intraplaque hemorrhage and disruption of the plaque surface. MATERIALS AND METHODS We selected the first 100 patients of the Plaque At RIS...

متن کاملContrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging of intraplaque neovascularization in carotid arteries: correlation with histology and plaque echogenicity.
OBJECTIVES This study was designed to evaluate contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging of carotid atherosclerosis as a clinical tool to study intraplaque neovascularization. BACKGROUND Plaque neovascularization is associated with plaque vulnerability and symptomatic disease; therefore, imaging of neovascularization in carotid atherosclerosis may represent a useful tool for clinical risk stratifi...
