Plant parasitic nematodes, substrates or grass species as reasons for poor reestablishment of a sand‐based putting green after winter kill

چکیده

In 2018–2019, establishment problems were encountered, after reseeding creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) on a sand-based putting green ice encasement at the NIBIO Turfgrass Research Center, Norway. Seeds germinated, but seedlings attained purple color and died in large patches. Replacement of top 3 cm layer with new sand amended Sphagnum peat or garden compost did not solve problem. To explain this phenomenon, we (1) analyzed original substrate for nematodes patches without reestablishment failure; (2) conducted factorial pot trial Chewings fescue (Festuca rubra ssp. commutata) seeded different substrates, some them layers, phosphorus (P) fertilization. The nematode counts showed six times more stubby-root two spiral needle dead than healthy seedings. trial, fastest slowest was observed treatments that included substrate, respectively. old resulted stagnation from four weeks seeding, while unaffected. We conclude failure to reestablish primarily due nematodes, which are likely be critical established turf. later reestablished successfully 100 % red seed blend.

Atomic force microscopy of plant-parasitic nematodes.

A simple method for atomic force microscopy (AFM) of nematode cuticle was developed to visualize the external topography of Helicotylenchus lobus, Meloidogyne javanica, M. incognita, and Xiphinema diversicaudatum. Endospores of two isolates of the nematode parasite, Pasteuria penetrans, adhering to M. incognita and X. diversicaudatum were also visualized and measured by this technique. Scanning...

Spatial pattern analysis of plant-parasitic nematodes.

Spatial patterns of Meloidogyne incognita, Tylenchorhynchus claytoni, Helicotylenchus dihystera, and Criconemella ornata were analyzed using Hill's two-term local quadrat variance method (TTLQV), spectral analysis, and spatial correlation. Data were collected according to a systematic grid sampling plan from seven tobacco fields in North Carolina. Different estimates of nematode cluster size we...

Reproduction of Plant-parasitic Nematodes on Winter Rapeseed (Brassica napus ssp. oleiferas).

The reproduction of isolates of five plant-parasitic nematode species on the winter rapeseed cultivars Bridger, Gorzanski, H-47, Lindora, and Viking was evaluated. Each cultivar was a good host for Helicotylenchus pseudorobustus, Meloidogyne hapla, and M. incognita, All rapeseed cultivars were poor hosts for Pratylenchus scribneri, in comparison with a susceptible reference host. Heterodera gly...
