Plant community persistence strategy is elevation?specific

چکیده

Aims Persistence plays a key role in both plant population and community dynamics as it allows withstanding temporarily habitat conditions unsuitable for growth reproduction. Plants can exploit three different strategies to persist situ (building soil seed banks, increasing adult longevity and/or clonal reproduction), the dominance of which might vary along environmental gradients. Yet, their relative persistence has never been investigated. Location The Bavarian Alps, Germany. Methods We collected data on persistence, clonality 290 species occurring 18 grasslands located an elevational gradient 1,000 metres examined contribution community. Linear models were used estimate relationship between elevation these strategies. Results found that certain strategy varied depending variability. Specifically, lowlands was mainly achieved by persistent dense banks with extended (larger spread distances higher number offspring). Contrastingly, main alpine communities increased longevity. Conclusions changes each are interrelated suggesting trade-off among them. conclude this important co-existence assembly, be useful understand vegetation under ongoing climate change improve restoration efforts upland ecosystems.

Bacterial persistence: a winning strategy?

It has long been known that antibiotic treatment will not completely kill off a bacteria population. For many species a small fraction of bacteria is not sensitive to antibiotics. These bacteria are said to persist. Recently it has been shown that persistence is not a permanent state and that in fact a bacterium can switch back and forth between persistent and non persistent states. We introduc...

Self-thinning and community persistence in a simple size-structured dynamical model of plant growth.

This paper presents a size-structured dynamical model of plant growth. The model takes the form of a partial differential-integral equation and includes the effects of self- shading by leaves. Closed form solutions are presented for the equilibrium size density distribution. Analytic conditions are derived for community persistence, and the self-thinning exponent is obtained as a function of sp...

Phylogenetic plant community structure along elevation is lineage specific

The trend of closely related taxa to retain similar environmental preferences mediated by inherited traits suggests that several patterns observed at the community scale originate from longer evolutionary processes. While the effects of phylogenetic relatedness have been previously studied within a single genus or family, lineage-specific effects on the ecological processes governing community ...

Resonant activation: a strategy against bacterial persistence.

A bacterial colony may develop a small number of cells genetically identical to, but phenotypically different from, other normally growing bacteria. These so-called persister cells keep themselves in a dormant state and thus are insensitive to antibiotic treatment, resulting in serious problems of drug resistance. In this paper, we proposed a novel strategy to 'kill' persister cells by triggeri...
