Pitfalls of prenatal diagnosis associated with mosaicism

چکیده
Key content Fetal placental mosaicism, of which confined mosaicism is a subtype, occurs in 2–3% pregnancies. Confined may lead to false positive result on non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for common aneuploidies. The risk chorionic villus sample (CVS) following NIPT 2, 4, 22 and 59% trisomy 21, 18, 13 45, X respectively. Following the absence significant fetal structural anomaly (FSA), care required selecting optimal diagnostic invasive test. Discussion limitations implications essential referral clinical genetics be warranted. Learning objectives To understand embryological causes types mosaicism. appreciate underlying principles genomic strategies relation follow suggested management test counselling. Ethical issues Clinicians face dilemma high-risk setting normal ultrasound. Awaiting long-term culture, as opposed short-term culture CVS, or amniocentesis delays potential termination pregnancy. Sex chromosome abnormalities without an identifiable FSA cannot interpreted reliably. Hence, should not offered sex aneuploidy.

Prenatal Diagnosis of Bilateral Ectrodactyly and Radial Agenesis Associated with Trisomy 10 Mosaicism
Ectrodactyly or split hand and foot malformations (SHFMs) are rare malformations of the limbs, characterized by median clefts of the hands and feet, syndactyly, and aplasia and/or hypoplasia of the phalanges. They represent a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder, with both sporadic and familial cases. Most of the genomic rearrangements identified to date in some forms of SHFM are a...
متن کاملResults and pitfalls in prenatal cytogenetic diagnosis.
Since 1969, we have cultured over 200 diagnostic amniotic fluids. Of these, 183 were for cytogenetic diagnosis. The chromosome analysis was successful in 168 cases. The indications and the results ofthe affected fetuses (followed by therapeutic abortion) are: (1) previous child with Down's syndrome: 62 cases (1 :47,XX,+21); (2) advanced maternal age: 54 cases (1 :47,XXY; 1 :45,X/46,XY mosaicism...
متن کاملClinical aspects, prenatal diagnosis, and pathogenesis of trisomy 16 mosaicism.
INTRODUCTION Analysis of data from cases of trisomy mosaicism can provide insight for genetic counselling after prenatal diagnosis and for the elucidation of the pathogenesis of trisomy during pregnancy. METHODS Statistical analysis was carried out on data from 162 cases of pregnancies with prenatal diagnosis of trisomy 16 mosaicism. RESULTS The majority of cases resulted in live birth (66%...
متن کاملPrenatal diagnosis of mosaicism for 11q terminal deletion.
The phenotype of 11q terminal deletion also known as Jacobsen syndrome is a clinically well known entity whose diagnosis in infancy and childhood is based on clinical examination, hematological and cytogenetic findings. Hematological features in Jacobsen syndrome are very similar to those reported in Paris-Trousseau syndrome (PTS) which is also associated with11q terminal deletion. Karyotype an...
متن کاملPrenatal diagnosis and gonadal findings in X/XXX mosaicism.
Prenatal diagnosis of a case of X/XXX mosaicism is presented. In spite of the fact that over 50% of the cells cultured from both ovaries were trisomic for the X chromosome, fetal öocytes were rarely found. This case illustrates that the presence of a triple-X cell line, even in a relatively high percentage of ovarian cells, does not necessarily protect the ovary from 'aöogenesis'. This observat...
