Pilot Study of Small Animal Rotating Intern Telephone Communication Training Using Simulated Referring Veterinarians

Proficiency in client communications is now widely accepted as a significant requirement of veterinary student education, with numerous training systems use and documentation outcomes required for academic accreditation. Little information available concerning communication house officers (interns residents), despite the large number new graduates who enter such programs seeking further mentorship. The majority focuses on face-to-face interactions clients development core skills. By contrast, specialty hospitals frequently communicate about cases practitioner colleagues by telephone, to assess emergent urgent referrals follow up shared cases. Successful telephone these valuable skill cultivate novice interns. In this pilot study, self-reported intern confidence skills improved after telephone-based simulated referring veterinarian (RDVM) experience. RDVMs, training, shows promise incorporation into future experiences veterinarians at level.
