Physical Design and Experimental Verification of a Huygens’ Metasurface Two-Lens System for Phased-Array Scan-Angle Enhancement

Over the past decades, many radome designs to extend angular scan range of phased-array antennas have been devised by utilizing dielectric materials and metamaterials. More recently, metasurface technology such as planar lenses beam deflectors applied phased arrays, enabling scan-angle enhancers a low profile. In this work, physical Huygens’ (HMS) two-lens system for doubling array is presented. For HMS unit cells, wire-loop topology deployed achieve high transmission required phase-angle shift. The proposed analyzed full-wave simulations experiments. simulation results demonstrate that angle doubles when incident below 15° in accordance design specification. Furthermore, directivity degradation refracted beams two-HMS good agreement with theory. Finally, fabricated two 15λ long wide 16 × 16-element patch antenna source experimentally verified at 10 GHz. experimental are simulated showing angle-doubling performance ±2° errors.
