Phreatic volcanic eruption preceded by observable shallow groundwater flow at Iwo-Yama, Kirishima Volcanic Complex, Japan

چکیده

Abstract It is difficult to forecast phreatic eruptions because they are often characterised by an abrupt onset at shallow depths beneath volcanoes. Here we show that temporal changes in the tilt, tremor, and horizontal electric field have occurred repeatedly near vent of a small eruption Iwo-Yama, Kirishima Volcanic Complex, Japan. Such geophysical were observed 13 times, with one these events occurring immediately before 2018 eruption. These observations suggest hydrothermal intrusions, which as tilt tremors, commonly induce near-surface cold groundwater flow, electric-field changes. Near-surface flows towards active vent, potentially inhibiting However, explosive occur when intrusion flow depleted. The key controlling occurrence can be monitored using measurements.

Nano-volcanic Eruption of Silver

Silver (Ag) is one of the seven metals of antiquity and an important engineering material in the electronic, medical, and chemical industries because of its unique noble and catalytic properties. Ag thin films are extensively used in modern electronics primarily because of their oxidation-resistance. Here we report a novel phenomenon of Ag nano-volcanic eruption that is caused by interactions b...

Submarine landslide triggered by volcanic eruption recorded by in situ

NW Rota-1 is a submarine volcano in the Mariana volcanic arc that is notable as the site where underwater explosive eruptions were fi rst witnessed in A.D. 2004. After years of continuous low-level eruptive activity, a major landslide occurred at NW Rota-1 in August 2009, triggered by an unusually large eruption that produced 10 times the acoustic energy of the background level of activity. An ...

Rapid laccolith intrusion driven by explosive volcanic eruption

Magmatic intrusions and volcanic eruptions are intimately related phenomena. Shallow magma intrusion builds subsurface reservoirs that are drained by volcanic eruptions. Thus, the long-held view is that intrusions must precede and feed eruptions. Here we show that explosive eruptions can also cause magma intrusion. We provide an account of a rapidly emplaced laccolith during the 2011 rhyolite e...
