Phononic manipulation of antiferromagnetic domains in NiO

چکیده

Abstract The interaction between the crystal lattice and spins appears to be a very efficient mechanism for non-thermal manipulation of magnetic order. A particularly intriguing question is whether vibrations can also used control or even switch domains in collinear antiferromagnets, where all other mechanisms fail. To answer this question, here we study effects induced by tunable narrow-band infrared optical pulses single crystals antiferromagnetic nickel oxide. Our measurements reveal that resonant excitation vicinity frequency longitudinal phonons leads displacement NiO, potentially revealing promising method manipulate

Antiferromagnetic proximity effect in epitaxial CoO/NiO/MgO(001) systems

Magnetic proximity effect between two magnetic layers is an important focus of research for discovering new physical properties of magnetic systems. Antiferromagnets (AFMs) are fundamental systems with magnetic ordering and promising candidate materials in the emerging field of antiferromagnetic spintronics. However, the magnetic proximity effect between antiferromagnetic bilayers is rarely stu...

Magnetic moments at the surface of antiferromagnetic NiO(100).

The orientation of magnetic moments at the (100) surface of antiferromagnetic NiO single crystals is studied by x-ray linear magnetic dichroism in photoemission microscopy. T domains are observed terminating at the surface, with domain boundaries running mostly along in-plane [10] directions. From the detailed polarization dependence we find that the magnetic surface structure of a cleaved crys...

Spin oscillations in antiferromagnetic NiO triggered by circularly polarized light.

Coherent spin oscillations were nonthermally induced by circularly polarized pulses in the fully compensated antiferromagnet NiO. This effect is attributed to the action of the effective magnetic field generated by an inverse Faraday effect on the spins. The novelty of this mechanism is that spin oscillations are driven by the time derivative of the effective magnetic field which acts even on "...

Surface and bulk spin ordering of antiferromagnetic materials: NiO(111).

We present a study of the prototypical NiO(111) antiferromagnet by nonresonant surface x-ray magnetic scattering. Direct access to the antiferromagnetic surface and bulk spin ordering is demonstrated. Our data support a first order antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition. A quantitative determination of the magnetization profile is proposed. It is shown that the NiO(111) surface spins rema...

Magnetization Measurements of Antiferromagnetic Domains in Sr2Cu3O4Cl2

The Cu3O4 layer in Sr2Cu3O4Cl2 is a variant of the square CuO2 lattice of the high-temperature superconductors, in which the center of every second plaquette contains an extra Cu2+ ion. Whereas the ordering of the spins in the ground-state and the spin-wave excitations of this frustrated spin system are both well understood, we find peculiar behavior resulting from antiferromagnetic domain wall...
