چکیده
Plant phenology, i. e. the timing of life cycle events, is related to individual fitness and species distribution ranges. Temperature one most important drivers plant phenology together with day length. The adaptation their may be for success invasive species. present study aims at understanding how performance legume Lupinus polyphyllus vary latitude. We sampled data across a >2000 km latitudinal gradient from Central Northern Europe. quantified variation in flowering fruiting L. using >1600 digital photos inflorescences 220 plants observed weekly 22 sites. year which different phenological phases were reached, increased 1.3–1.8 days per degree latitude, whereas growing (gdd) required these decreased 5–16 gdd However, this difference disappeared, when length each included calculation was considered. earliest latest climatic zone reach any three studied differed by 23–30 temperature requirements stages between 62 236 gdd. Probably, invasion will further increase northern part Europe over next decades due climate warming. For control, our results suggest that countries large extent, mowing date should shift ca. week 500 sites similar elevations.

Loss of epiphytic diversity along a latitudinal gradient in southern Europe.
Latitudinal gradients that involve macroclimatic changes can affect the diversity of several groups of plants and animals. Here we examined the effect of a latitudinal gradient on epiphytic communities on a single host species (Fagus sylvatica) to test the core-periphery theory. The latitudinal span considered, covering two biogeographic regions, is associated with major changes in rainfall dur...
متن کاملHabitat width along a latitudinal gradient
We use the Chowdhury ecosystem model, one of the most complex agent-based ecological models, to test the latitude-niche breadth hypothesis, with regard to habitat width, i.e., whether tropical species generally have narrower habitats than high latitude ones. Application of the model has given realistic results in previous studies on latitudinal gradients in species diversity and Rapoport's rule...
متن کاملThermal adaptation along a latitudinal gradient in damselflies
Understanding how temperature affects biological systems is a central question in ecology and evolutionary biology. Anthropogenic climate change adds urgency to this topic, as the demise or success of species under climate change is expected to depend on how temperature affects important aspects of organismal performance, such as growth, development, survival and reproduction. Rates of biologic...
متن کاملVariability of alder-dominated forest vegetation along a latitudinal gradient
Plant species establishment and survival along environmental gradients have commonly been attributed to different environmental niches, life-history and adaptive traits [1]. Effective phenotype adaptation of alder species to extreme soil conditions allows them to form canopy-closed forest vegetation on alluvial and marshland localities. Alder forests represent azonal plant communities developed...
متن کاملStructure of Benthic Communities along the Taiwan Latitudinal Gradient
The distribution and the structure of benthic assemblages vary with latitude. However, few studies have described benthic communities along large latitudinal gradients, and patterns of variation are not fully understood. Taiwan, lying between 21.90°N and 25.30°N, is located at the center of the Philippine-Japan arc and lies at the northern margin of coral reef development. A wide range of habit...
