Petrophysical characterisation of volcanic ejecta to constrain subsurface lithological heterogeneities: implications for edifice stability at basaltic volcanoes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Piton de la Fournaise (PdF) is a basaltic volcano whose activity characterized by effusive to mildly explosive eruptions. The geologic record preserves evidence of eruptions associated with the seaward sliding steep east flank. Such formed calderas that are several km in diameter and their products have been emplaced as breccias. breccias PdF offer opportunity sample wide range different lithologies covering most stratigraphy edifice. Petrophysical measurements revealed corresponding variability density, porosity, P-wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, confirming petrophysical consequences lithological diversity. Different cannot simply be distinguished on basis physical properties. We infer instability should not interpreted solely terms altered rock units. large heterogeneity crustal rocks must considered when interpreting monitoring data assessing hazards related stability.

Models of ice melting and edifice growth at the onset of subglacial basaltic eruptions
[1] Models of the early stages of basaltic eruptions beneath temperate glaciers are presented that consider the evolving sizes of volcanic edifices emplaced within subglacial cavities. The cavity size reflects the competing effects of enlargement by melting and closure by downward ductile deformation of the ice roof, which occurs when the cavity pressure is less than glaciostatic due to meltwat...
متن کاملMagma chamber behavior beneath a volcanic edifice
[1] The construction of a large volcanic edifice at Earth’s surface generates stresses in the upper crust whose magnitude is comparable to those of tectonic stresses and overpressures within a magma chamber. We study how this affects eruption behavior. Analytical calculations are carried out in two dimensions for a cylindrical reservoir with an internal overpressure in an elastic half-space wit...
متن کاملEvidence for Recent Large Magnitude Explosive Eruptions at Damavand Volcano, Iran with Implications for Volcanic Hazards
Damavand is a large dormant stratovolcano in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran located in one of the most populous provinces, which could be adversely affected by tephra fall from Damavand. The youngest known eruption is a lava flow on the western flanks with an age of 7.3 ka. The volcanic products are predominantly porphyritic trachyandesite. Three major young pumice deposits, named here a...
متن کاملFluidized Impact Ejecta and Volcanic Blast Surge
Introduction: Pyroclastic surges and impact ejecta in volatile-rich environment are dilute suspension currents in which particles are carried in turbulent flows under the influence of gravity. They have a lot in common, even if historically studied by different branches of geosciences with a few exceptions [1-3]. It seems reasonable to use impact cratering approaches in volcanology and vice ver...
متن کاملFracture and compaction of andesite in a volcanic edifice
The failure mode of lava-dilatant or compactant-depends on the physical attributes of the lava, primarily the porosity and pore size, and the conditions under which it deforms. The failure mode for edifice host rock has attendant implications for the structural stability of the edifice and the efficiency of the sidewall outgassing of the volcanic conduit. In this contribution, we present a syst...
