Petrogenesis of the 91-Mile peridotite in the Grand Canyon: Ophiolite or deep-arc fragment?

Recognition of fundamental tectonic boundaries has been extremely difficult in the (>1000-km-wide) Proterozoic accretionary orogen southwestern North America, where main rock types are similar over large areas, and region experienced multiple postaccretionary deformation events. Discrete ultramafic bodies present a number areas that may mark important boundaries, especially if they can be shown to represent fragments ophiolite complexes. However, most small intensely altered, precluding petrogenetic analysis. The 91-Mile peridotite Grand Canyon is largest best preserved body known southwest United States. It presents special opportunity for analysis illuminate significance rocks other parts orogen. exhibits spectacular cumulate layering. Contacts with surrounding Vishnu Schist interpreted tectonic, except along one margin, intrusive relations have interpreted. Assemblages include olivine, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, magnetite, phlogopite, very rare plagioclase. Textures suggest phlogopite result late intercumulus crystallization. Whole-rock compositions mineral modes support derivation from an arc-related mafic magma. K-enriched subduction-related fluid mantle wedge given rise K-rich, hydrous, high-pressure partial melt produced early Al-rich diopside, primary phlogopite. silicate minerals, all high Mg#, sequence crystallization, lack plagioclase consistent crystallization at relatively pressures. Thus, not fragment represents closure former ocean basin. does, however, significant boundary lower-crustal arc cumulates juxtaposed against middle-crustal schists granitoids.
