Petiole length reduction is an indicator of waterlogging stress for Trifolium subterraneum ssp. yanninicum

چکیده

Abstract Background and aims The pasture legume Trifolium subterraneum ssp. yanninicum exhibits waterlogging tolerance. This study investigates diversity for tolerance within . We tested the hypotheses that (1) variation exists (2) is related to phenotypic growth trait differences, which (3) reflect eco-geographic variables at site of origin. Methods Twenty-eight diverse ecotypes collected from Mediterranean region four cultivars were grown in a controlled environment glasshouse. Seedling traits measured 14 21 days after sowing. Waterlogged free-draining (control) treatments then imposed 28 days. Relative distance multivariate plasticity indices calculated. Results Under waterlogging, shoot (87–108% controls) root (80–116% relative rates (RGRs) differed significantly among Waterlogging tolerance, as assessed by RGR, had strong positive correlations with RGR ( r = 0.86; P < 0.001), petiole length 0.59; 0.001) leaf size 0.55; 0.01) under waterlogging. proportion biomass increased due being maintained (mean 102% controls), but decreased 84% controls). Petiole was most plastic trait. Seed size, seedling traits, maturity duration origin not Conclusions Wide reduction, an easy-to-measure non-destructive indicator, could be used preliminary selection tool when screening large numbers breeding program.

Shade avoidance in Trifolium repens: costs and benefits of plasticity in petiole length and leaf size.

We tested whether the degree of shade-induced plasticity in petiole length and leaf area is related to the mean trait value expressed under high-light conditions, and to what extent trait values expressed under high-light and shaded conditions affect plant performance. Thirty-four Trifolium repens genotypes were used with a wide range of petiole lengths and leaf areas. Plants were subjected to ...

Effects of Moisture Stress on Acid-Soluble Phosphorus Compounds in Trifolium subterraneum.

Little is known about phosphorus metabolism in plants suffering from moisture stress. Several metabolic processes, which are completely dependent upon phosphorylated intermediates, are noticeably affected by moisture stress conditions. Photosynthetic rate decreases markedly in severely stressed plants (13). Rate of fixation of CO2 in the dark decreases (12). Above a diffusion pressure deficit (...

Hyperhomocysteinemia is an indicator of oxidant stress.

Sir, We found the recently published paper of Hoffman [1], to be alike to our work by focusing on the connection of elevated plasma homocysteine levels and the risk of developing diabetes or its complications. This correlation was first communicated by Looker et al. in 2003 and amended by Shukla et al. Later, in 2005, Cho et al. supported their findings. High homocysteine levels as a source of ...

An advanced reference genome of Trifolium subterraneum L. reveals genes related to agronomic performance

Subterranean clover is an important annual forage legume, whose diploidy and inbreeding nature make it an ideal model for genomic analysis in Trifolium. We reported a draft genome assembly of the subterranean clover TSUd_r1.1. Here we evaluate genome mapping on nanochannel arrays and generation of a transcriptome atlas across tissues to advance the assembly and gene annotation. Using a BioNano-...

Assessment of enzyme induction and aerenchyma formation as mechanisms for flooding tolerance in Trifolium subterraneum 'Park'.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of enzyme induction and aerenchyma formation in prolonged tolerance to soil flooding in a variety of underground clover (Trifolium subterraneum 'Park') previously selected for resistance. Seedlings were grown in hydroponic tanks, initially with aeration for 3 weeks and subsequently in the absence of aeration for up to 3 weeks. After 1 h in th...
