Permafrost as a potential pathogen reservoir

چکیده
Summary The Arctic is currently warming at unprecedented rates because of global climate change, resulting in thawing large tracts permafrost soil. A great challenge understanding the implications thaw on human health and environment. Permafrost a reservoir mostly uncharacterized microorganisms viruses, many which could be viable. Given our limited knowledge permafrost-resident microbes, we also lack basis to judge whether they pose risks humans, animals, plants. Here delve into features as microbial habitat discuss what known about potential for pathogens emerge thaws. This review has broader ecosystem sustainability new environment that will from thawed landscape.

The Leech as a Potential Virus Reservoir
Leeches, fed on swine infected with hog cholera, contained virus for as long as 87 days after their infective blood meals. In three instances, infected leeches apparently transmitted hog cholera virus to susceptible swine in the process of normal feeding. Myxoma virus persisted in leeches for as long as 154 days after the ingestion of a blood meal from rabbits with myxomatosis. Leeches fed cons...
متن کاملBats as Reservoir Hosts of Human Bacterial Pathogen, Bartonella mayotimonensis
A plethora of pathogenic viruses colonize bats. However, bat bacterial flora and its zoonotic threat remain ill defined. In a study initially conducted as a quantitative metagenomic analysis of the fecal bacterial flora of the Daubenton's bat in Finland, we unexpectedly detected DNA of several hemotrophic and ectoparasite-transmitted bacterial genera, including Bartonella. Bartonella spp. also ...

Methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS), and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in particular, have become a public and veterinary health concern. The search for MRS reservoirs outside human hospitals is needed in order to understand the reasons for their persistence and to control their spread. MRS have been isolated from rats, but little is known about their occurrence in fo...

PURPOSE This pilot study sought to determine the rate and degree to which gram-negative Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus occurred on the inside of utility gloves used at University of Maine at Augusta, Dental Health Programs' dental hygiene clinic. METHODS Five steam autoclave utility gloves were randomly selected to se...
