Performance of Rice Genotypes under Temporally Variable Wetland Salinity Conditions of a Semiarid Sub-Saharan Climatic Environment

چکیده
In semiarid regions, soil salinity, like drought, restricts crop productivity, causing food shortages among most inhabitants—the smallholder subsistence farmers. Seasonal wetlands formed in these regions during the rainy seasons could be utilised for rice (Oryza spp.) cultivation to increase security, but is sensitive salinity. Field and greenhouse-pot experiments were performed at University of Namibia-Ogongo Campus, North-Central Namibia, evaluate genotypes’ responses seasonal wetland The field assessed 16 genotypes growth dry season grain production season, saline non-saline (control) wetlands. saline-wetland salinity was predominantly NaCl; electrical conductivity levels increased from 2.8 dS m−1 (rainy season) 34.3 (dry season), resulting a 0–14% dry-season plant survival rate. rainy-season decreased paddy yields all genotypes; however, Pokkali produced highest relative yields. pot experiment CG14 (salt-sensitive) (salt-tolerant) using soils collected bi-monthly wetland. reduced shoot did not affect Pokkali, while killed both genotypes. results this study suggest possibility cultivating salt-tolerant genotype, due salt dilution; would detrimental rice. More salinity-tolerance screening studies are warranted, order security Namibia other flood-prone worldwide.

Evaluation of salinity tolerance in rice genotypes
Salinity is considered as one of important physical factors influencing rice (Oryza sativa L.) production. Knowledge of salinity effects on rice seedling growth and yieldcomponents would improve management practices in fields andincrease our understanding of salt tolerance mechanisms in rice. This study was designed to assess the role of Saltol QTL in regards to effects of salinity on plant gro...

Crop production is inherently sensitive to climatic variations. Flowers have been admired and used by human to beautify their environment, and also as objects of romance, ritual, religion, medicine and as a source of food. Gladiolus (Gladiolus grandiflorus Andrews; family Iridaceae) is an important bulbous cut flower grown all over the world. The present study was carried out to check the growt...

Rice (Oryza sativa), a salt-sensitive species, has considerable genetic variation for salt tolerance within the cultivated gene pool. Two indica rice genotypes, FL478, a recombinant inbred line derived from a population developed for salinity tolerance studies, and IR29, the sensitive parent of the population, were selected for this study. We used the Affymetrix rice genome array containing 55,...
متن کاملUncertainties in predicting rice yield by current crop models under a wide range of climatic conditions.
Predicting rice (Oryza sativa) productivity under future climates is important for global food security. Ecophysiological crop models in combination with climate model outputs are commonly used in yield prediction, but uncertainties associated with crop models remain largely unquantified. We evaluated 13 rice models against multi-year experimental yield data at four sites with diverse climatic ...
