Performance of Concrete Pavement Incorporating Portland Limestone Cement in Cold Weather

The City of Winnipeg (COW) and the University Manitoba (UM), Canada, have partnered since 2015 to conduct research on use portland limestone cement (PLC), comprising up 15% filler, in transportation infrastructure such as pavements bridges. Laboratory tests substantiated equivalent or superior resistance concrete made from PLC, relative that general (GU) (Type I) durability exposures including acids, sulfate salts chloride-based deicing salts. Subsequently, a field trial was done 2018, which involved casting two pavement sections PLC GU Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. current paper reports construction long-term (three years/winter seasons) properties these fresh properties, strength, absorption chloride ions penetrability, well microstructural features. Cores were taken mid-slabs at joints, are most vulnerable locations damage pavements. results showed with had performance compared those terms fresh, hardened properties. Thus, it presents viable option for sustainable flatwork cold regions.
