Performance-Based Payments for Soil Carbon Sequestration Can Enable a Low-Carbon Bioeconomy

چکیده

Incentivizing bioenergy crop production in locations with marginal soils, where low-input perennial crops can provide net carbon sequestration and economic benefits, will be crucial to building a successful bioeconomy. We developed an integrated assessment framework compare switchgrass cultivation corn-soybean rotations on the basis of costs, revenues, soil organic (SOC) at 100 m spatial resolution. calculated profits (or losses) when lands are converted from corn-soy rotation across range farm gate biomass prices payments for SOC State Illinois, United States. The annual yields estimated 0.1 0.4 Mg ha–1 7.3 15.5 dry matter ha–1, respectively, state. Without sequestration, only small fraction land would achieve 20% profit margin if switchgrass, but $40–80 Mg–1 CO2e compensation could increase economically viable area by 140–414%. With compensation, 10 years 1.6 million ha Illinois produce worth $1.6–2.9 billion (0.95–1.8 biomass) mitigate 5–22 CO2e.

★ This paper represents work completed at the Australian National University. I am now working at the Productivity Commission. The views expressed in this paper do not necessarily reflect those of the Productivity Commission. Carbon dioxide emissions resulting from direct human activities, primarily fossil fuel use and land clearing, have altered the global carbon cycle. Carbon is absorbed (seq...

Soil carbon dynamics and potential carbon sequestration by rangelands.

The USA has about 336 Mha of grazing lands of which rangelands account for 48%. Changes in rangeland soil C can occur in response to a wide range of management and environmental factors. Grazing, fire, and fertilization have been shown to affect soil C storage in rangelands, as has converting marginal croplands into grasslands. Carbon losses due to soil erosion can influence soil C storage on r...

Soil carbon sequestration in United States rangelands

Rangelands are uncultivated lands that include grasslands, savannahs, steppes, shrub lands, deserts and tundra. The native vegetation on rangelands is predominantly grasses, forbs and shrubs (Kothmann, 1974). Rangelands cover 31 percent of the land surface area of the United States (Havstad et al., 2009), and up to half of the land surface area worldwide (Lund, 2007). Most land areas that are n...

Soil Carbon Sequestration through Desertification Control

Desertification, a natural process, is exacerbated by anthropogenic activities. It reduces soil productivity, jeopardizes food security, impairs environment quality, accelerates global warming and exacerbates global security risks. Degradation of soil and vegetation aggravates the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The biophysical processes of soil and vegetation degradation are ...
