Perceptual timing precision with vibrotactile, auditory, and multisensory stimuli

چکیده
The growing use of vibrotactile signaling devices makes it important to understand the perceptual limits on information processing. To promote that understanding, we carried out a pair experiments vibrotactile, auditory, and bimodal (synchronous auditory) temporal acuity. On each trial, subjects experienced set isochronous, standard intervals (400 ms each), followed by one interval variable duration ± 1–80 ms). Intervals were demarcated short or pulses. Subjects categorized timing last describing final pulse as either “early” “late” relative its predecessors. In Experiment 1, trial contained three isochronous intervals, an length. 2, number per varied, from four. Psychometric modeling revealed stimulation produced poorer discrimination than auditory stimulation. Moreover, signals dominated sensitivity, inter-individual differences in discriminability reduced with Additionally, varying failed improve sensitivity modality, suggesting memory played key role judgments duration.

Vibrotactile--auditory interactions are post-perceptual.
Vibrotactile stimuli can elicit compelling auditory sensations, even when sound energy levels are minimal and undetectable. It has previously been shown that subjects judge auditory tones embedded in white noise to be louder when they are accompanied by a vibrotactile stimulus of the same frequency. A first experiment replicated this result at four different levels of auditory stimulation (no t...

Multisensory integration of sounds and vibrotactile stimuli in processing streams for "what" and "where".
The segregation between cortical pathways for the identification and localization of objects is thought of as a general organizational principle in the brain. Yet, little is known about the unimodal versus multimodal nature of these processing streams. The main purpose of the present study was to test whether the auditory and tactile dual pathways converged into specialized multisensory brain a...

Children with language-based learning problems often exhibit pronounced speech perception difficulties. Specifically, these children have increased difficulty separating brief sounds occurring in rapid succession (temporal resolution). The purpose of this study was to better understand the consequences of auditory temporal resolution deficits from the perspective of the neural encoding of speec...
متن کاملMultisensory training can promote or impede visual perceptual learning of speech stimuli: visual-tactile vs. visual-auditory training
In a series of studies we have been investigating how multisensory training affects unisensory perceptual learning with speech stimuli. Previously, we reported that audiovisual (AV) training with speech stimuli can promote auditory-only (AO) perceptual learning in normal-hearing adults but can impede learning in congenitally deaf adults with late-acquired cochlear implants. Here, impeder and pr...
