چکیده

Abstract In this paper, I defend a new theory of the nature and individuation perceptual capacities. argue that we need capacities to explain modal facts about what sorts phenomenal states one can be in. my view by arguing for three adequacy constraints on capacities: must individuated at least partly in terms their place hierarchy capacities, where these include senses themselves; an adequate account sensitive empirical considerations; should accommodate capacity perceive. arrive considering how Schellenberg’s fails, before defending developing alternative line with constraints. which there are few, coarse-grained fulfil complex explanatory roles because they evaluatively gradable many axes. Finally, view, bear particularly close relation sensory modalities themselves.

Discrimination of Word Senses with Hypernyms

Languages are inherently ambiguous. Four out of five words in English have more than one meaning. Nowadays there is a growing number of small proprietary thesauri used for knowledge management for different applications. In order to enable the usage of these thesauri for automatic text annotations, we introduce a robust method for discriminating word senses using hypernyms. The method uses coll...

Coding perceptual discrimination in the somatosensory thalamus.

The sensory thalamus is classically viewed as a relay station of sensory information to cortex, but recent studies suggest that it is sensitive to cognitive demands. There are, however, few experiments designed to test whether this is so. We addressed this problem by analyzing the responses of single neurons recorded in the somatosensory thalamus while trained monkeys reported a decision based ...

Perceptual Discrimination of Prosodic Types

A perceptual discrimination test was conducted to investigate whether humans can discriminate prosodic types solely based on suprasegmental acoustic cues. Excerpts from Chinese, English, Spanish, and Japanese, differing in lexical accent types and rhythm types, were used. From these excerpts, “source” signals of the source-filter model, differing in F0, intensity, and HNR, were created and used...

Perceptual learning on orientation and direction discrimination

Two experiments were conducted to determine the extent to which perceptual learning transfers between orientation and direction discrimination. Naive observers were trained to discriminate orientation differences between two single-line stimuli, and direction differences between two single-moving-dot stimuli. In the first experiment, observers practiced the orientation and direction tasks along...

Bilingual Infants Demonstrate Perceptual Flexibility in Phoneme Discrimination but Perceptual Constraint in Face Discrimination

Perceptual narrowing is a highly significant development associated with the first year of life. It conventionally refers to an orientation toward nativeness whereby infant's perceptual sensitivities begin to align with the phonetic properties of their native environment. Nativeness effects, such as perceptual narrowing, have been observed in several domains, most notably, in face discriminatio...
