Perceptions of Peace Agreements and Political Trust in Post-War Guatemala, Nepal, and Northern Ireland

(Re)gaining citizens’ trust is a challenge for post-war governments. Political crucial understanding both the risk of civil war in first place and state-society relationships that emerge afterwards. Peace agreements are tools to stop fighting, address war’s injustices, provide blueprint state’s future – they do so varying degrees. Yet we have little systematic knowledge how people react such with what consequences. We argue societies, people’s perceptions strategies aimed at ending violence (re)building state an enduring impact on view state. In this study, examine association between post-conflict political approval peace analyzing set nationally representative, comparative surveys from Guatemala, Nepal, Northern Ireland, three cases where long wars were ended by agreements. find individuals’ agreement perception it has been implemented positively associated trust, accounting views substantially improve conventional explanations trust.
