Perception of surface slant from oriented textures.
When a surface covered with a regular texture is viewed in perspective, the projected texture provides a number of cues to 3D surface orientation. For oriented textures, one cue is perspective convergence: symmetry lines that are parallel along the surface project to lines that vary systematically in orientation. We investigated the contribution of perspective convergence to perception of 3D sl...
متن کاملEarly dynamics of stereoscopic surface slant perception
Surface orientation is an important visual primitive that can be estimated from monocular or binocular (stereoscopic) signals. Changes in motor planning occur within about 200 ms after either type of signal is perturbed, but the time it takes for apparent (perceived) slant to develop from stereoscopic cues is not known. Apparent slant sometimes develops very slowly (Gillam, Chambers, & Russo, 1...
متن کاملRetinal speed gradients and the perception of surface slant.
Previous work has demonstrated a difference in human sensitivity to compressive and shearing speed gradients. This raises the possibility that the ability to estimate the slant of a surface may vary with its direction of tilt. No such variance was found here, which may indicate that slant estimation depends upon deformation rather than upon compression or shear.
متن کاملRelative Size Disparities and the Perception of Surface Slant
Perceived slant produced by size disparities in random-dot displays was measured by tactile matching. For a 60 deg surface, slant produced by vertical-size disparity (the induced effect) was opposite to that produced by horizontal-size disparity. Overall-size disparity produced a little slant. With small displays, effects of horizontal and vertical disparities were reduced but not those of over...
متن کاملThe effect of texture relief on perception of slant from texture.
Texture can be an effective source of information for perception of slant and curvature. A computational assumption required for some texture cues is that texture must be flat along a surface. There are many textures which violate this assumption, and have some sort of texture relief: variations perpendicular to the surface. Some examples include grass, which has vertical elements, or scattered...
