Specifying pancreatic endocrine cell fates
Cell replacement therapy could represent an attractive alternative to insulin injections for the treatment of diabetes. However, this approach requires a thorough understanding of the molecular switches controlling the specification of the different pancreatic cell-types in vivo. These are derived from an apparently identical pool of cells originating from the early gut endoderm, which are succ...
متن کاملPancreatic endocrine neoplasms: epidemiology and prognosis of pancreatic endocrine tumors.
Pancreatic endocrine tumors (PETs) are uncommon tumors with an annual incidence <1 per 100 000 person-years in the general population. The PETs that produce hormones resulting in symptoms are designated as functional. The majority of PETs are non-functional. Of the functional tumors, insulinomas are the most common, followed by gastrinomas. The clinical course of patients with PETs is variable ...
متن کاملBeta-cell Hyperplasia Induced by Hepatic Insulin Resistance: Role of a Liver-pancreatic Endocrine Axis through Insulin Receptor a Isoform
Objective: Type 2 diabetes results from a combination of insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion. To directly address the effects of hepatic insulin resistance in adult animals, we developed an inducible liver-specific insulin receptor knockout mouse (iLIRKO). Research Design and Methods: Using this approach, we were able to induce variable IR deficiency in a tissue-specific manner (l...
متن کاملChronic laxative abuse associated with pancreatic islet cell hyperplasia.
Marked pancreatic islet cell hyperplasia was found in a patient with laxative-induced diarrhoea. It is suggested that laxative abuse might be an important aetiological factor in patients with pancreatic islet cell hyperplasia and the watery diarrhoea syndrome but in whom no hormonal excess can be demonstrated.
متن کاملModeling Pancreatic Endocrine Cell Adaptation and Diabetes in the Zebrafish
Glucose homeostasis is an important element of energy balance and is conserved in organisms from fruit fly to mammals. Central to the control of circulating glucose levels in vertebrates are the endocrine cells of the pancreas, particularly the insulin-producing β-cells and the glucagon producing α-cells. A feature of α- and β-cells is their plasticity, an ability to adapt, in function and numb...
