Pathogen disgust sensitivity: Individual differences in pathogen perception or pathogen avoidance?

چکیده
Abstract The emotion disgust motivates the avoidance of pathogens and contaminants. Individuals differ in their tendency to experience this is referred as pathogen sensitivity. Yet, it remains unclear which differences psychological processes are captured by We tested two hypotheses about how information processing structure underlying might give rise individual Participants ( n = 998) rated perceived health individuals with or without facial blemishes indicated comfortable they would feel having physical contact them. For participants high sensitivity, were more indicative poor was strongly related comfort contact. These findings suggest that sensitivity reflects interpret stimuli an infection risk weight given estimated when deciding who should be approached avoided.

Individual Differences in Moral Disgust Do Not Predict Utilitarian Judgments, Sexual and Pathogen Disgust Do
The role of emotional disgust and disgust sensitivity in moral judgment and decision-making has been debated intensively for over 20 years. Until very recently, there were two main evolutionary narratives for this rather puzzling association. One of the models suggest that it was developed through some form of group selection mechanism, where the internal norms of the groups were acting as path...
متن کاملIndividual differences in pathogen disgust predict men’s, but not women’s, preferences for facial cues of weight
Previous research suggests that people who score higher on measures of pathogen disgust demonstrate (1) stronger preferences for healthy individuals when assessing their facial attractiveness and (2) stronger negative attitudes about obese individuals. The relationship between pathogen disgust and attractiveness judgments of faces differing in cues of weight has yet to be investigated, however....
متن کاملCandida auris, an Emerging Fungal Pathogen
The emerging pathogen “Candida auris” is attracting considerable international attention due to its rising reports, transmission through health professionals, high rate of treatment failure and resistance to multiple antifungal agents, particularly fluconazole. In spite of the global emergence of C. auris, epidemiological data and true prevalence of infections due to this organism are not clear...
متن کاملPathogen evolution under host avoidance plasticity.
Host resistance consists of defences that limit pathogen burden, and can be classified as either adaptations targeting recovery from infection or those focused upon infection avoidance. Conventional theory treats avoidance as a fixed strategy which does not vary from one interaction to the next. However, there is increasing empirical evidence that many avoidance strategies are triggered by exte...
