Partitioning of persistent hydrophobic contaminants to different storage lipid classes

چکیده

Lipids generally represent the major matrix contributing to absorptive capacity for hydrophobic organic contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. The aim of present study was determine whether partition a different degree storage lipid classes: wax ester (WE) and triacylglycerol (TAG). This undertaken by studying experimentally partitioning organochlorine compounds between lipids (WE or TAG) silicone rubber phase. Our results indicate that have slightly higher affinity WE than TAG. findings thus corroborate earlier suggestions accumulate greater extent food webs with reliance on WE, such as Arctic. knowledge is interest since it implies possible changes planktonic community species composition, thereby may consequences accumulation apex predators. However, magnitude these remains unknown, there well be other factors importance previously observed Arctic systems. Thus, we here identified aspects regarding need further scrutiny, quantitative estimates suggested difference capacities

Potential for plastics to transport hydrophobic contaminants.

Plastic debris litters marine and terrestrial habitats worldwide. It is ingested by numerous species of animals, causing deleterious physical effects. High concentrations of hydrophobic organic contaminants have also been measured on plastic debris collected from the environment, but the fate of these contaminants is poorly understood. Here, we examine the uptake and subsequent release of phena...

Hydrophobic-cluster analysis of plant protein sequences. A domain homology between storage and lipid-transfer proteins.

Hydrophobic-cluster analysis was used to characterize a conserved domain located near the C-terminal amino acid sequence of wheat (Triticum aestivum) storage proteins. This domain was transformed into a linear template for a global search for similarities in over 5200 protein sequences. In addition to proteins that had already been found to exhibit homology to wheat storage proteins, a previous...

Hydrophobic Coupling of Lipid Bilayer Energetics to Channel Function

The hydrophobic coupling between membrane-spanning proteins and the lipid bilayer core causes the bilayer thickness to vary locally as proteins and other "defects" are embedded in the bilayer. These bilayer deformations incur an energetic cost that, in principle, could couple membrane proteins to each other, causing them to associate in the plane of the membrane and thereby coupling them functi...

Short-term exposure testing of six different passive samplers for the monitoring of hydrophobic contaminants in water.

Passive sampling devices are increasingly relied upon for monitoring non-polar organic contaminants in water. While many types of devices are available they have seldom been evaluated alongside each other. We tested six passive sampling devices namely: Chemcatcher, two modified versions of the membrane enclosed sorptive coating (MESCO I (m) and MESCO II), silicone rod and strip and semipermeabl...

Hydrophobic sequences target and anchor perilipin A to lipid droplets.

Perilipins regulate triacylglycerol storage and hydrolysis in adipocytes. The central 25% of the perilipin A sequence, including three hydrophobic sequences (H1, H2, and H3) and an acidic region, targets and anchors perilipins to lipid droplets. Thus, we hypothesized that H1, H2, and H3 are targeting and anchoring motifs. We now show that deletion of any single hydrophobic sequence or combinati...
