Parity (and time-reversal) anomaly in a semiconductor
The physics of a parity anomaly, potentially observable in a narrow-gap semiconductor, is revisited. Fradkin, Dagotto, and Boyanovsky have suggested that a Hall current of anomalous parity can be induced by a Peierls distortion on a domain wall. I argue that a perturbation inducing the parity anomaly must break the time reversal symmetry, which rules out the Peierls distortion as a potential ca...
متن کاملTime-reversal and parity conservation for gravitating quarks
The complex mass term of a quark does not violate time-reversal or parity in gravitational interactions, in spite of an axial anomaly. Time-reversal is known to be violated in the weak interactions. Mass terms q̄LMqR + ̄̃qLM̃q̃R+hc are generated for quarks q having charge + 2 3 and quarks q̃ having charge − 1 3 in the shape of complex matrices M, M̃ from electroweak symmetry breaking. On diagonalizati...
متن کاملEmergent Chiral Symmetry: Parity and Time Reversal Doubles
There are numerous examples of approximately degenerate states of opposite parity in molecular physics. Theory indicates that these doubles can occur in molecules that are reflection-asymmetric. Such parity doubles occur in nuclear physics as well, among nuclei with odd A ∼ 219-229. We have also suggested elsewhere that such doubles occur in particle physics for baryons made up of cbu and cbd q...
متن کامل0 Parity and time reversal violating nuclear polarizability
We propose a nuclear mechanism which can induce an atomic electric dipole moment (EDM). Parity and time reversal violating (P, T-odd) nuclear forces generate a mixed P, T-odd nuclear polarizability β ik (defined by an energy shift U = −β ik E i H k , E is electric field and H magnetic field). The interaction of atomic electrons with β ik produces an atomic EDM. We performed an analytical calcul...
متن کاملAspects of Parity, Cp, and Time Reversal Violation in Hot Qcd
We discuss various aspects of parity, CP, and time reversal invariances in QCD. In particular, we focus attention on the previously proposed possibility that these experimentally established symmetries of strong interactions may be broken at finite temperature and/or density. This would have dramatic signatures in relativistic heavy ion collisions; we describe some of the most promising signals.
