Paraproteinemic Neuropathies: A Review for Neurologists Neuropatías.

چکیده
As part of the workup polyneuropathy, neurologists often encounter patients with paraproteinemias, also called monoclonal gammopathies. Given relatively rising prevalence both polyneuropathy and paraproteinemias in our aging population, this coexistence is frequently due to chance. Still, certain types have a well-defined causal role development therefore has implications their subsequent work-up management. Once gammopathy been deemed as “benign” or undetermined significance, looking at heavy chain subtype paramount deciding whether it related polyneuropathy. Conversely, polyneuropathies associated gammopathies tend distinct clinical, serological, and/or electrodiagnostic phenotype that helps establishing an association. Recognizing association will determine appropriate

Paraproteinemic neuropathy: a practical review
The term paraproteinemic neuropathy describes a heterogeneous set of neuropathies characterized by the presence of homogeneous immunoglobulin in the serum. An abnormal clonal proliferation of B-lymphocytes or plasma cells, which may or may not occur in the context of a hematologic malignancy, produces the immunoglobulins in excess. If malignancy is identified, treatment should be targeted to th...
متن کاملParaproteinemic maculopathy.
PURPOSE Paraproteinemia relates to monoclonal gammopathy-producing pathologic antibodies with serous macular detachment being an uncommon ocular manifestation. We ascertained the clinical course of maculopathy in paraproteinemia and investigated the effect of various therapeutic methods on the resolution of subretinal deposits. DESIGN Multicenter, retrospective, observational case series. P...
متن کاملNEUROSCIENCE FOR NEUROLOGISTS A review of structural magnetic resonance neuroimaging
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is often divided into structural MRI and functional MRI (fMRI). The former is a widely used imaging technique in research as well as in clinical practice. This review describes the more important developments in structural MRI in recent years, including high resolution imaging, T2 relaxation measurement, T2*-weighted imaging, T1 relaxation measurement, magnetisa...
متن کاملREVIEW: NEUROSCIENCE FOR NEUROLOGISTS Nanotechnology for neuronal ion channels
Ion channels provide the basis for the regulation of electrical excitability in the central and peripheral nervous systems. This review deals with the techniques that make the study of structure and function of single channel molecules in living cells possible. These are the patch clamp technique, which was derived from the conventional voltage clamp method and is currently being developed for ...
متن کاملAnti-N-Methyl-D-Aspartate-Receptor Encephalitis, a Challenge for Neurologists or a Chameleon for Psychiatrists: A Case Report
Anti-N-Methyl-D-Aspartate-Receptor (NMDA-R) encephalitis is a new autoimmune disorder, often paraneoplastic in nature, presenting with complex neuropsychiatric symptoms. Diagnosed serologically, this disorder is often responsive to immunosuppressant treatment. We here in report the case of a 56-year-old man with anti NMDA-R encephalitis presenting initially with disorientation and hallucinati...
