Palm Oil Based Water-Resistant Coating using Pre-Polymer Method

The paper presents some results on the ability of palm oil polyol to replace petroleum-based in polyurethane (PU) synthesis. In this study, with amine functionality hydroxyl value (OH value) between 240 -253 mg KOH/g was used as component conventional polyol. Four different formulationsof coating have been prepared using pre-polymer process namely PU1, PU2, PU3 and PU4 isophorone diisocyanate ratio (OH:NCO) 1:0.6 1:0.5 acetone within 25-50 wt %. PU1 (1:0.6) PU2(1:0.5) result brittle film, while (1:05) has a soft flexiblefilm better transparency. This finding establishes that content effect final properties formed. polymerization reaction monitored thefourier transform infra-red spectroscopy it found peak correspondsto NH (3302 cm-1), CO (1627 cm-1) CN (1543 stretching urethane linkage appearingin all PU films. water uptake test done films percentage is less than 5% 24 hours immersion.The surface morphology shows thathomogeneitywas achieved OH:NCO 25 wt% acetone. havethe potential be developed for resistant coating.
