چکیده

The continental early-middle Miocene Santa Cruz Formation (SCF) in Austral Patagonia contains the best record of South American mammalian faunas prior to Great Biotic Interchange (GABI) and is particular interest because it preserved high-latitude biotic Southern Hemisphere spanning mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum. Through intensive fieldwork we recovered numerous fossil vertebrates, mostly mammals, from SCF along Río (RSC), type area for formation its fauna. We examine whether fauna differed among three distinct temporal intervals spanning, oldest youngest, Atlantic coastal suite localities Fossil Levels (FL) 1–7, at about 17.4 Ma, through RSC Barrancas Blancas (BB), between ~17.2 ~16.3 Segundas (SBB), ~16.5 ~15.6 Ma. With objective reconstructing paleoenvironmental community structure these faunas, compared them with 55 extant lowland across America 8° N 55° S latitude representing a wide range seasonality and, annual rainfall temperature, as well canopy height net primary productivity, sampling communities ranging tropical rainforest semi-arid steppe. Extant nonvolant genera each locality were assigned body size interval niche parameters reflecting diet substrate use, behavioral data literature. Extinct similar metrics on basis their morphology. From generic parameters, compiled indices ratios that express vectors fauna, including total number genera, pervasiveness arboreality, frugivory, browsing, relative richness predators prey. variables used model based uniformitarian principles. sample includes 44 mammals FL 38 BB, SBB. The conditions and properties of hydrothermal vents and hydrothermal fields are compared in terms of their ability to support processes related to the origin of life. The two sites can be considered as alternative hypotheses, and from this comparison we propose a series of experimental tests to distinguish between them, focusing on those that involve concentration of solutes, self-assembly of m...

Fossil localities of the Santa Cruz Formation (Early Miocene, Patagonia, Argentina) prospected by Carlos Ameghino in 1887 revisited and the location of the Notohippidian

Between January and September of 1887 Carlos Ameghino carried out his first geologic and paleontological expedition to the Río Santa Cruz, Patagonia. Based on the fossils and geologic information compiled, in 1887 and 1889, Florentino Ameghino named more than 120 new species of extinct mammals and his Formación Santacruceña and Piso Santacruceño (Santacrucian stage). Data published by both brot...

Paleoparasitological results for rodent coprolites from Santa Cruz Province, Argentina.

The aim of this study was to examine the parasite remains present in rodent coprolites collected from the archaeological site Alero Destacamento Guardaparque (ADG) located in the Perito Moreno National Park (Santa Cruz Province, 47 degrees 57'S 72 degrees 05'W). Forty-eight coprolites were obtained from the layers 7, 6 and 5 of ADG, dated at 6,700 +/- 70, 4,900 +/- 70 and 3,440 +/- 70 years BP,...

The Santa Cruz Eddy. Part II: Mechanisms of Formation

The formation mechanism of the Santa Cruz eddy (SCE) is investigated using the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research Mesoscale Model (MM5). Simulations of 25–26 August 2000 showed that two eddy instances formed on that night, a finding supported by observations. The two eddies had similar behavior: they both formed in the sheltered Santa Cruz, C...
