چکیده
Abstract The paleoenvironmental and paleogeographic development of the Norwegian–Greenland seaway remains poorly understood, despite its importance for oceanographic climatic conditions Paleocene–Eocene greenhouse world. Here we present analyses sedimentological paleontological characteristics deposits (between 63 47 million years old) in northeast Greenland, investigate key unconformities volcanic facies observed through seismic reflection imaging offshore basins. We identify uplift that culminated widespread regression, volcanism, subaerial exposure during Ypresian. reconstruct paleogeography Atlantic–Arctic region propose this led to fragmentation period. suggest became severely restricted between about 56 53 ago, effectively isolating Arctic from Atlantic ocean thermal maximum early Eocene.

Rapid acidification of the ocean during the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum.
The Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM) has been attributed to the rapid release of approximately 2000 x 10(9) metric tons of carbon in the form of methane. In theory, oxidation and ocean absorption of this carbon should have lowered deep-sea pH, thereby triggering a rapid (<10,000-year) shoaling of the calcite compensation depth (CCD), followed by gradual recovery. Here we present geochemi...
متن کاملMammalian dispersal at the Paleocene/Eocene boundary.
A profound faunal reorganization occurred near the Paleocene/Eocene boundary, when several groups of mammals abruptly appeared on the Holarctic continents. To test the hypothesis that this event featured the dispersal of groups from Asia to North America and Europe, we used isotope stratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, and quantitative biochronology to constrain the relative age of important Asian...
متن کاملA continental shelf perspective of ocean acidification and temperature evolution during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum
A rapid and large injection of isotopically light carbon into the ocean-atmosphere reservoirs is signaled by a negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE) at the Paleocene-Eocene boundary ~56 m.y. ago. To better understand the extent of ocean warming and acidification associated with the carbon injection we generated elemental and isotopic records of surface and thermocline planktonic foraminifera ...

often considered a geologic analog to the modern, rapid addition of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The ability to assess the sensitivity of many rate-dependent climate change impacts, based on the PETM analogy, hinges critically on the PETM warming rate. Current estimates of the PETM warming rate face considerable problems, for example, due to the nontrivial statistical challenges in account...
متن کاملMagnetostratigraphic calibration of Eocene^Oligocene dino£agellate cyst biostratigraphy from the Norwegian^Greenland Sea1
The presence of abundant age-diagnostic dinoflagellate cysts in Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 913B (Leg 151), Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 338 (Leg 38) and ODP Hole 643A (Leg 104) has enabled the development of a new biostratigraphy for the Eocene^Oligocene interval in the Norwegian^Greenland Sea. This development is important because the calcareous microfossils usually used for biostrati...
