P33 Using the Australian National Antimicrobial Prescribing Survey (NAPS) portal to undertake an annual point prevalence survey (PPS)

Abstract Background Annual point prevalence surveys (PPS) are cornerstones in antimicrobial stewardship (AMS). The National Antimicrobial Prescribing Survey (NAPS) is a web-based qualitative auditing platform that provides standardized and validated tool to assist hospitals assessing the appropriateness of prescribing. Objectives To evaluate usefulness NAPS UK tertiary hospital setting. Methods Permission use was given by on pilot basis. e-learning completed AMS team. All patients antimicrobials single day were extracted using Cerner electronic prescribing system. Indication, compliance guidelines reviewed, anonymized uploaded trained individuals NAPS. Ethical approval not required. Results 695 audited. 35% (n = 241) prescribed antimicrobials. total number prescriptions 326, 46% 190) under general medicine geratology. most common indications for respiratory 27% 87) followed intra-abdominal infection 11% 37), sepsis bacteraemia urinary tract 10% 34) skin soft tissue 8% 25). agent co-amoxiclav 34% 111). Compliance with achieved 84% 273) prescriptions, 72% 236) deemed appropriate. Inappropriate more prevalent (38%) ceftriaxone (43%) compared amoxicillin (6%) doxycycline (8%) (Figure 1). reasons inappropriate prescription incorrect (prolonged) duration (44%) spectrum too broad (28%). Conclusions Using NAPS, we identified geratology major users antimicrobials, pneumonia leading indication Co-amoxiclav main antibiotic prescribed, this other antibiotics, such as ceftriaxone, below 90% target.
