Vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation: prenatal diagnosis and early endovascular management.

A prenatally diagnosed patient was referred to our hospital at 35 weeks of gestation. Antenatal ultrasonography demonstrated cardiomegaly and aneurysm of the vein of Galen. A 3,290 g male baby was delivered by elective cesarean section at 37 weeks of gestation. Physical examination was remarkable for tachypnea, hyperdynamic precordium with a continuous murmur, cranial bruit and bounding carotid...

Antenatal diagnosis of aneurysmal malformation of the vein of Galen.

Vein of Galen malformation (VGAM) results from an aneurysmal aberration with an arteriovenous shunting of blood. Vein of Galen aneurysmal malformations are the most frequent arteriovenous malformations in infants and fetuses. The congenital malformation develops during weeks 6-11 of fetal development. Infants often die from high-output congestive heart failure.

Prenatal diagnosis of a vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation with MR imaging – report of two cases

BACKGROUND Vein of Galen malformations (VGMs) are rare congenital defects of cerebral vessels. They are formed between the 6(th) and 11(th) week of gestation. The background of this defect involves presence of one or more arterovenous fistulas directing bloodflow toward a persistent, dilated, proximal part of median prosencephalic vein (MProsV). Ultrasound examination is a basic test for diagno...

Prenatal diagnosis of a vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation with fetal MR imaging study.

We read with interest the article by Jones et al (1), in which the authors describe their experience in diagnosing and treating 13 children with vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation (VGAM) during a 14year period. Their experience confirms that children with VGAM presenting during the neonatal period have a generally much worse prognosis than do those presenting later in childhood. Only two of ...

Vein of Galen Aneurysmal Malformation and High-output Cardiac Failure in a Newborn

Background: Vein of Galen aneurysm (VGA) is the most common form of symptomatic cerebrovascular malformation in neonates. It develops in a fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy due to unknown reasons, but it is likely to have a genetic etiology. The prognosis of VGA is usually poor, particularly in newborns with heart failure due to high-flow intracerebral shunt. Surgery and endovascular em...
