p-Coumaroyl and feruloyl arabinoxylans from plant cell walls as substrates for ruminal bacteria.
Growth of the ruminal bacteria Ruminococcus flavefaciens FD1, Selenomonas ruminantium HD4, and Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens 49 was limited by ester-linked feruloyl and p-coumaroyl groups. The limitation of growth on phenolic acid-carbohydrate complexes varied with individual bacteria and appeared to be influenced by ability to hydrolyze carbohydrate linkages.
متن کاملPlant cell walls as targets for biotechnology.
Plants are the sources of major food, feed, and fiber products that are used globally. This past year has seen advances in our understanding of the enzymes that modify wall architecture, the cloning of the first cellulose synthase gene, and revisions to the lignin biosynthetic pathway. These discoveries have facilitated the development of new strategies to alter cell wall properties in transgen...
متن کاملPlant cell walls.
Cell walls are important features of plant cells that perform a number of essential functions, including providing shape to the many different cell types needed to form the tissues and organs of a plant. Forming the interface between adjacent cells, plant cell walls often play important roles in intercellular communication. Because of their surface location, plant cell walls play an important r...
متن کاملPlant Cell Walls
The cell wall is the strong, outermost layer of a plant cell, located external to the plasma membrane. The cell wall often far outlives the protoplast which synthesized it. In cork, for example, the wall serves its particular biological role (physical protection of a tree trunk) for many years after the death of the protoplast. However, the walls of living cells are not inert ‘boxes’ but comple...
متن کاملInducible bacteriophages from ruminal bacteria.
The incidence of temperate bacteriophage in a wide range of ruminal bacteria was investigated by means of induction with mitomycin C. Supernatant liquid from treated cultures was examined for phagelike particles by using transmission electron microscopy. Of 38 ruminal bacteria studied, nine organisms (23.7%) representing five genera (Eubacteria, Bacteroides, Butyrivibrio, Ruminococcus, and Stre...
