Oxygen isotopes of calcite precipitated at high ionic strength: CaCO3-DIC fractionation and carbonic anhydrase inhibition

چکیده
Background electrolytes affect calcite precipitation and dissolution rates hence have the potential to impact kinetic isotope fractionation between dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) species. We grew from NaCl-CaCl 2 solutions ( T = 25 °C, pH 8.3, crystal growth rate 10 ?6.3 ± 0.3 mol m ?2 s ?1 ) test for ionic strength effects on oxygen an isotopically equilibrated pool (? c/EIC ). Calcite was grown in presence of enzyme carbonic anhydrase bovine erythrocytes (bCA) promote isotopic equilibration DIC pool. No evidence effect ? found NaCl concentrations up 0.35 M (1000ln? c/w 28.0 0.1; n 7). For experiments conducted with [NaCl] > M, could not be maintained equilibrium water due inhibitory bCA. The use other types CA may required maintain solution close or above that seawater. results were modeled successfully box model a CO -fed tracks composition each species CaCO 3 . experimental modeling suggest efficacy bCA decreases exponentially increasing [NaCl]. quantify salt quantity k cat / K , which relates catalyzed constant hydration concentration can implemented models biomineralization extend our knowledge vital marine organisms.

Inhibition by glycosaminoglycans of CaCO3 (calcite) crystallization.
Of a range of glycosaminoglycans, heparin and heparan sulphate were the most effective inhibitors in vitro of CaCO3 (calcite) crystallization as assayed by conductimetric measurements. The possible role of such glycosaminoglycans in modulating calcium-salt crystallizations in vivo is discussed.

متن کاملFractionation of Oxygen Isotopes at the Faces of Smoky Quartz
Recently we reported on a new isotope effect [1]: During the growth of natural amethyst, Si02 with different lsO content is incorporated at crystallo graphically different faces of the crystal, the 180 / 160 ratio increasing in the order z-face, r-face, m-face. Meanwhile a similar effect in natural calcite was re ported by J. A. D. Dickson [2]. Care must be taken if one wants to single out su...
متن کاملOxygen isotope composition of subglacially precipitated calcite: possible paleoclimatic implications.
Isotopic analyses of subglacially precipitated calcite from near a modern temperate glacier show that the delta(18)O (= (18)O/(16)O relative to standard mean ocean water) of the calcite records the delta(18)O of the ice from that glacier. It may therefore be possible to determine the delta(18)O of Pleistocene ice sheets on the basis of isotopic analyses of calcite formed under that ancient ice....
