Oxidative stress and peri-implantitis: The role of oxidants and antioxidants

Background: Peri-implantitis is the main cause of implant failure and associated with augmented oxidative stress or tissue destruction. In this study, it was aimed to investigate oxidant-antioxidant balance parameters in individuals peri-implantitis, considering clinical findings control group. Methods: (n=30) healthy participated study. Peri-implant parameters, including probing depth (PD), gingival index (GI), plaque (PI), bleeding on (BoP), keratinized mucosa width (KMW), were recorded. The levels total antioxidant capacity (TAC), oxidant (TOC), (OSI), arylesterase (ARE) saliva examined. To identify relationship between biomarkers used Spearman’s correlation coefficient. Results: TOC values higher they correlated BoP, GI, PD, PI (P=0.004, r=0.370; P=0.010, r=0.328; P=0.038, r=0.268; P=0.007, r=0.342, respectively). TAC PI, GI (P=0.021, r=-0.297; P=0.035, r=-0.273; P=0.012, r=-0.321, OSI showed a negative KMW (mm) (P=0.046, r=-0.259). Conclusion: Increased decreased ARE activity could be predictors peri-implantitis development. Adequate important production antioxidants.
