OXA-58 and IMP-4 carbapenem-hydrolyzing beta-lactamases in an Acinetobacter junii blood culture isolate from Australia.
Hospital-acquired infections with Acinetobacter spp. have been reported worldwide (13). Success of the organism is attributed to its ability for long-term survival in a hospital environment and its ability to rapidly acquire resistance to antimicrobials (2). Carbapenems have been the agents of choice for serious Acinetobacter sp. infections, but unfortunately the clinical utility of this class ...
متن کاملCharacterization of the carbapenem-hydrolyzing oxacillinase oxa-58 in an Acinetobacter genospecies 3 clinical isolate.
Based on imipenem resistance in an Acinetobacter genospecies 3 clinical isolate, we were able to identify, for the first time in this genomic species, a plasmid-encoded bla(OXA-58) gene that was 100% homologous to the same gene in Acinetobacter baumannii.
متن کاملCarbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from Tunisia producing the OXA-58-like carbapenem-hydrolyzing oxacillinase OXA-97.
The basis of the beta-lactam resistance of 39 multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates recovered from hospitalized patients was studied. These isolates were collected from 2001 to 2005 at the Sahloul Hospital in Sousse, Tunisia. They belonged to two distinct clones. One clone that grouped 19 isolates produced a carbapenem-hydrolyzing oxacillinase, OXA-97, that differed from OXA-58 b...
متن کاملFirst report of the carbapenem-hydrolyzing oxacillinase OXA-58 in Acinetobacter baumannii isolates in Italy.
Emergence of Acinetobacter baumannii with resistance or reduced susceptibility to carbapenems has been reported worldwide (4). Acinetobacter may develop resistance to carbapenems through various mechanisms, including decreased permeability, efflux pump overexpression, and production of carbapenemases (3, 4, 9). Four of the eight carbapenemase-hydrolyzing oxacillinase (OXA) clusters have been id...
متن کاملRegional occurrence of plasmid-mediated carbapenem-hydrolyzing oxacillinase OXA-58 in Acinetobacter spp. in Europe.
The spread of the plasmid-mediated carbapenem-hydrolyzing oxacillinase OXA-58 was detected in Acinetobacter sp. clinical isolates from southern Europe, the Balkans, and central Turkey. It may contribute significantly to the emergence of carbapenem resistance in Acinetobacter spp., at least in this part of the world.
