OWEFE—open modeling framework for integrated water, energy, food, and environment systems

Abstract The integrated approach to managing the fundamental resources for human life, namely, water, energy, food, and environment as their irreplaceable foundation, presents a profound opportunity sustainable development. However, despite huge potential, systems (iWEFEs) are rarely put into practice because of, among others, complexity lack of uniform openly available models describe, configure simulate such systems. To fill this gap, we present open modeling framework (OWEFEs) based on energy framework. OWEFE follows an open, cross-sectoral, modular design address crucial challenges project development iWEFEs. In study, apply first time model wastewater biogas system agrivoltaics system. results OWEFE-based in range conventional respectively on-site measurements indicating framework’s capability diverse wide application can improve assessment, planning, configuration iWEFEs infrastructure
