Overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off in metastable dual-phase heterogeneous structures using variable temperature rolling and annealing

چکیده
A novel variable temperature rolling (VTR) and annealing process was conducted on a metastable austenitic stainless steel. Strain softening occurred during tensile straining in both cold rolled cryogenic rolled-annealed steels, leading to low uniform elongations of only 2-3%. In contrast, thanks the dual-phase heterogeneous lamellar structure achieved via VTR process, ultra-high strength over 1 GPa obtained, strain hardening led remarkable increase elongation up 10%. The high ductility are attributed significant work-hardening derived from superior deformation-induced sustained transformation-induced plasticity effect.

Dislocation Strengthening without Ductility Trade-off in Metastable Austenitic Steels
Strength and ductility are mutually exclusive if they are manifested as consequence of the coupling between strengthening and toughening mechanisms. One notable example is dislocation strengthening in metals, which invariably leads to reduced ductility. However, this trend is averted in metastable austenitic steels. A one-step thermal mechanical treatment (TMT), i.e. hot rolling, can effectivel...

متن کاملBreaking through the strength-ductility trade-off dilemma in an Al-Si-based casting alloy
Al-Si-based casting alloys have a great potential in various industrial applications. Common strengthening strategies on these alloys are accompanied inevitably by sacrifice of ductility, known as strength-ductility trade-off dilemma. Here, we report a simple route by combining rapid solidification (RS) with a post-solidification heat treatment (PHT), i.e. a RS + PHT route, to break through thi...

The strength-ductility trade-off has been a long-standing dilemma in materials science. This has limited the potential of many structural materials, steels in particular. Here we report a way of enhancing the strength of twinning-induced plasticity steel at no ductility trade-off. After applying torsion to cylindrical twinning-induced plasticity steel samples to generate a gradient nanotwinned ...
متن کاملAchieving high strength and high ductility in magnesium alloy using hard-plate rolling (HPR) process
Magnesium alloys are highly desirable for a wide range of lightweight structural components. However, rolling Mg alloys can be difficult due to their poor plasticity, and the strong texture yielded from rolling often results in poor plate forming ability, which limits their further engineering applications. Here we report a new hard-plate rolling (HPR) route which achieves a large reduction dur...
