متن کاملOn the over-barrier reflection in quantum mechanics with multiple degrees of freedom
We present an analytic example of two dimensional quantum mechanical system, where the exponential suppression of the probability of over–barrier reflection changes non-monotonically with energy. The suppression is minimal at certain “optimal” energies where reflection occurs with exponentially larger probability than at other energies.
متن کاملLocalising Relational Degrees of Freedom in Quantum Mechanics
In this thesis I present a wide-ranging study of localising relational degrees of freedom, contributing to the wider debate on relationism in quantum mechanics. A set of analytical and numerical methods are developed and applied to a diverse range of physical systems. Chapter 2 looks at the interference of two optical modes with no prior phase correlation. Cases of initial mixed states — specif...
متن کاملSpatial Degrees of Freedom in Everett Quantum Mechanics
Stapp claims that, when spatial degrees of freedom are taken into account, Everett quantum mechanics is ambiguous due to a “core basis problem.” To examine an aspect of this claim I generalize the ideal measurement model to include translational degrees of freedom for both the measured system and the measuring apparatus. Analysis of this generalized model using the Everett interpretation in the...
متن کاملParadoxical Reflection in Quantum Mechanics
This article concerns a phenomenon of elementary quantum mechanics that is quite counter-intuitive, very non-classical, and apparently not widely known: a quantum particle can get reflected at a potential step downwards. In contrast, classical particles get reflected only at upward steps. As a consequence, a quantum particle can be trapped for a long time (though not forever) in a region surrou...
