Origins and population genetics of sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) introduced to Australia and New Zealand

چکیده

Context Some populations of introduced species cause significant undesirable impacts but can also act as reservoirs for genetic diversity. Sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) are ‘Vulnerable’ in their native range and invasive Australia New Zealand. Genetic data be used to determine whether these might serve declining identify spatial units management.Aims We aimed the provenance sambar Zealand, characterise diversity population structure. Methods mitochondrial control region sequences 18 nuclear microsatellite loci 24 Zealand 63 Australian collected across continuous habitat each location. estimated differentiation by using pairwise FST, AMOVA, Structure analyses. compared our with 27 previously published phylogenetic relationships.Key results genetically more similar those west (South Central Highlands India, Sri Lanka), than east (eastern throughout Southeast Asia). Nuclear was lower range; only one haplotype found population. were distinct there no structure within either population. Conclusions The differences we identified between two at putatively neutral indicate that may underlying functional loci. lack suggests individuals do not experience barriers dispersal areas sampled.Implications Although is reduced range, harbour unique variants could strengthen under threat range. apparent high levels gene flow sampled suggest localised unlikely effective

Polymorphic microsatellite loci isolated from Cervus unicolor (Cervidae) show inbreeding in a domesticated population of Taiwan Sambar deer.

Primers for eight microsatellites were developed; they successfully amplified DNA from 20 domesticated Formosan Sambar deer (Cervus unicolor swinhoei). All loci were polymorphic, with 10-19 alleles per locus. The average observed heterozygosity across loci and samples was 0.310, ranging from 0 to 0.750 at each locus. All loci but one, CU18, deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium due to excess...

Three finger palpation technique of vas deferens for keyhole vasectomy in spotted (Axis axis) and sambar deer (Cervus unicolor)

Aim: Vasectomy is performed in deer for population control, maintain pedigreed animals and prevent inbreeding. Conventional procedure of vasectomy required a long-term anesthesia and longer duration of hospitalization, which often result in stress, morbidity and mortality. A study was conducted to capture, neuter and release the deer with minimal hospitalization and stress by adopting three fin...

The Antiinfective Effects of Velvet Antler of Formosan Sambar Deer (Cervus unicolor swinhoei) on Staphylococcus aureus-Infected Mice

We assayed the effects of velvet antler (VA) of Formosan sambar deer (Cervus unicolor swinhoei) and its extracts on the anti-infective activity against pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus in vitro and in vivo in this study. In vitro data indicated that the VA extracts stimulated the proliferation of resting splenocytes and macrophages in a dose-dependent manner up to the highest concentration used...

Phylogeography and conservation genetics of Eld's deer (Cervus eldi).

Eld's deer (Cervus eldi) is a highly endangered cervid, distributed historically throughout much of South Asia and Indochina. We analysed variation in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region for representatives of all three Eld's deer subspecies to gain a better understanding of the genetic population structure and evolutionary history of this species. A phylogeny of mtDNA haplotypes indic...
